Several issues concerning verifiability of sources edit

I've started to notice that a handful of sources and content that was just added are failing verification... looks like @Cureitlitte: included a lot of content with sources, but the sources do not back up what is stated in the article. --PerpetuityGrat (talk) 22:56, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I've deleted some of the grandiosity and WP:PUFFERY. Lots of sentences that reference other notable figures which I have removed. I also added several failed verification and citation needed templates, as some content is completely absent from the sourced or is unsourced entirely. I don't want to disregard an assumption of good faith, but there may be a COI involved with recent edits. --PerpetuityGrat (talk) 23:34, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you - the article includes: "The network never publicly acknowledged de la Garza’s hiring. Despite anchoring the midday broadcast, she is not currently under contract with Newsmax, suggesting she’s trying out with the network in a freelance capacity." Supported by embezzlement edit

This seems relevant:

Alden Shoe Company embezzlement in lead edit

I think it is highly pertinent to cover in the lead that de la Garza's assorted failing business ventures were funded via embezzlement money from her partner. Coverage in reliable sources on de la Garza from recent years is preponderous.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:52, 19 August 2021 (UTC) Reply

I have reverted this removal from the lead as the lead should summarise the rest of the article and this scandal is a major portion of the reliable source coverage of de la Garza and therefore belongs in the lead.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:12, 20 August 2021 (UTC) - strike sock commentReply

Legal issues edit

In 2020 Alden Shoe Company sued de la Garza over its former CFO's alleged embezzlement of $27 million.[1][2][3] The ex-CFO, Richard Hajjar, pled guilty wire fraud, unlawful monetary transactions and filing a false tax return, and was sentenced to 70 months in prison.[4][5]

Heroeswithmetaphors, I had referred to WP:BLPUNDEL in my message on your usertalk page, and I have posted to the BLP Noticeboard about this. This content appears to be contrary to WP:BLP policy for several reasons, including WP:BLPBALANCE section, which warns us against "claims that rely on guilt by association." This appears to be sensational coverage, as well as a WP:COATRACK about the ex-CFO, that in a BLP, seems particularly inappropriate to connect to the subject of this article. I continue to request that you self-revert and obtain consensus for whether and how this disputed content may be added. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 00:59, 25 March 2024 (UTC) - updated to add link to BLPN discussion Beccaynr (talk) 04:07, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree that we should get consensus before inclusion, but I would vote to include it. The "guilt by association" argument doesn't work because the former CFO was her boyfriend and that he was accused of funneling embezzled money to her. Two sentences in an article this long is not COATRACK, but also not lede-worthy. BBQboffingrill me 01:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think apparent gossip and allegations are BLP-worthy; the previous content that I had removed as WP:UNDUE and contrary to WP:BLPBALANCE included "De la Garza has repeatedly denied any romantic involvement." [1]. Beccaynr (talk) 01:14, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is neither gossip nor allegation that she had multiple business ventures that were dependent on funding by the embezzler, that a venture ended because that funding went away, that she was sued in an effort to recover that money and that she settled that suit. These statements are all well documented, with respectable sources like Esquire, the Boston Globe, and Boston Magazine to attest to them (far better sourced than just about anything else in this article, which is full of claims without reliable third-party sourcing that actually backs it up.) We should be careful about stating the nature of the relationship beyond the financial, and should avoid giving much value to any state of mind claimed for her in lawsuit filing, but we would be doing a poor job showing the shape of her career and reflecting the sources that exist if we avoided the matter of the funding and resultant lawsuit altogether. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 06:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think you are raising some good points, and perhaps we could try drafting some content on the talk page to figure out how to carefully present the content. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 06:30, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Richard Hajjar, then the CFO of Alden Shoe Company, provided the funding for several of de la Garza's business ventures, including [x y and z -- sorry, I'm about to head to bed and don't fell like looking them up]. When the company uncovered that Hajjar had embezzled over $20 million, using much of that to fund these ventures, that funding dried up, bringing an immediate end to [x and y]. Hajjar was convicted of his crime and sentenced to prison. Alden Shoe sued both Hajjar and de la Garza in an effort to recover what money they could; de la Garza reached a settlement with the company. Something like that. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 06:43, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think this is on the right track, and some more precision with dates and wordsmithing about the timing could help; I will plan to look at it after sleep. Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 06:50, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do think that the scale of funds needs to be included; the main source you're using indicates over $17 million to BdlG and her businesses. Instead of "a talk show", we should specifically say "Beauty & Bubbles", as we discuss the series above. The final sentence should be simplified to end to recover the money, leading to a confidential settlement. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 00:30, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I was just getting ready to comment that I was trying to get further detail in place but consider what I wrote below to be a working draft - I agree that the scale of the funds is a helpful detail to include and relevant to her biography/career development. I have no objection to including the details of the name of the series - it does have its own subsection in the article, and I was planning to review the article help assess what to emphasize. And I agree it is helpful to state that the confidential settlement was related to the lawsuit to recover the money. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 00:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
My comment above was being written as you were further editing what you had up; I'm fine with the presentation of the confidential settlement as it currently stands. Nat Gertler (talk) 01:06, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry I wasn't able to get to this earlier today; I will also be mostly offline for the rest of today through tomorrow, but I plan to return asap to focus on finalizing the details. In the meantime, I don't think all of the sources posted above are needed - the Esquire source is brief, seems written sensationally, and relies on and quotes the Boston Globe, while the Patriot Ledger source is about Hajjar's plea deal and mentions the lawsuits and de la Garza's settlement offer; neither of these sources seem necessary to include to support the content. ===Business ventures funded by Richard Hajjar (draft)===

Beginning in 2014, Richard Hajjar, then the CFO of Alden Shoe Company, provided funding for several business ventures started by de la Garza, beginning with the Bianca Unanchored show, then a skin-care line, and in 2019, a media company that produced a talk show and a reality docuseries.[1] By late 2019, Alden discovered Hajjar appeared to have been embezzling money from the company.[2][1] In 2020, Alden sued Hajjar, de la Garza, and de la Garza's businesses BDG Enterprises and Lucky Gal Productions in an attempt to recover the money,[2] and in 2021, Hajjar was charged and pled guilty to wire fraud, unlawful monetary transactions, and filing a false tax return.[1][3] De la Garza reached a confidential settlement with the company in 2021.[1]

Newsmax show edit

While it does appear that she had years on John Bachman Now, that show is no longer listed on the Newsmax schedule, and de la Garza appears to be the host of something called Newsline. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 06:24, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
