On capitalization

to the best of my knowledge, "bianca" has never been capitalized. not only can this be seen in their logo (which has remained unchanged for many years), but also in freeform's (one of the founders) referenced essay. the original author of this article went so far as to modify the quote from the essay to capitalize "bianca" upon including it in the article. i believe it is correct to leave the b lowercase. "First" web-based chat-room

i am content to leave this (and even believe it), but it would be nice to have some references out there. surely wired or something has some hard facts (pro or con)? i could find at least one other contender in a quick search, but who knows. Sadly I don't have any references, but can proudly say I was there when the very first Web chat took place. It was on bianca's Smut Shack, around 1994, 1995 or thereabouts. Web sites were so new back then, and Internet connections so slow, that simply posting to a forum page or reloading the page to check for new posts often took, not just several seconds or a minute, but even 5-10-20 minutes or more. Many days, the site would be completely overwhelmed and only a handful of users could get their messages posted. So the usual practice was to write a long, detailed message containing everything you planned to say, post it (taking forever to do), then come back some hours later or maybe the next day to see if anyone had replied. As people got more familiar with posting to a Web site and the reload speeds got better, one particular evening some of the users realized you could actually have a *conversation* in more-or-less real time - you could post a message (just a sentence or two now since you expected to have another chance to post again soon), see a reply in a very short time, post your own reply to their reply, etc. You could have a *real conversation*. Once it happened, the new idea took off instantly and the Web was changed forever. First 500 web sites

i am less convinced about the quote "one of the first 500 sites on the web", so have removed it. there are a couple places on wikipedia alone that give evidence to the contrary: User:Zompist/Early Web Info and List of websites founded before 1995. again, its subject to the definition of "web site" and the method used to count, but i think this text is a bit misleading. I don't know about "the first 500 sites", but my recollection is the site was founded in 1994. A copyright notice reading "copyright 1994-97 biancaTroll productions" can been seen in an archived 1997 version of their home page at archive.org:

The start date must be out - as I remember it being in existence when I was a student at Plymouth Polytechnic UK, That changed to Polytechnic South West - and then University of Plymouth ( Yes all in 3 years) As a graduated in 1992 it had to have been set up before that may be 91 - connected via JANET so had a fast connection for the day - and do remember some conversations taking place - not all smut -- was room themed and remember some discussions about cooking taking place in the Kitchen, but seems the discussions from the bedroom are the ones that have been remembered ! bianca's demise

The message boards at bianca.com are no longer operational and have not been so since late 2004; this includes the original smut shack. You may read the messages which are there but you cannot post new ones or reply to old ones. biance's chat is the only part of the site which still works, although it is down at the moment and it is uncertain if and when it will return. biance's email address is supposedly still valid but I am unsure if anything gets through and/or who, if anyone, reads/responds since I have not sent anything.

It's May 28, 2007 and it seems to finally have come to an end. You can still access bianca.com but the links to the message boards or chats are no longer valid. If you click on a board or chat you will be directed to a "Not Found" or equivalent error page rather than the "sorry try again later" message. The only links that work are Home, What's New and Overview; all other sublinks do not. Since the main bianca.com page is still up, is someone still paying to keep that up?

: I was one of the people who amused themselves by causing trouble on the site back in the late '90s, so have some first hand experience of some of the things (admittedly childish and pointless in hindsight) folks got up to. Removing The Reef creation section?

(Yes, I'd say that the editorial section about how and why the Reef was created was completely and utterly false. If you'd like detailed information on the creation of the site, feel free to contact me. I have no problem clearing the air. Please understand that a lot of rumors run rampant when things like this happen. The truth may be told by the person (me) who created the Reef, along with the other Admins on site. It's not nearly as interesting or entertaining as the rumors (One more thing, I am not the one who took that portion out. That was someone else. Thanks.  :) though.... Why is Red Light District listed in external links?

The Red Light District site listed in the external links section is a pornographic site and has nothing to do with the article or bianca.com. I re-added the accurate information on vandalism from members of the reef

I re-added the factual information, and will continue to do so any time vandals remove it. It was so big a part of the demise of the site, to leave it out is abserd Cosand (talk) 20:07, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Webby nomination and award

Hi! I have a mild COI, so I'm just going to put links and information and leave it to somebody else to edit. Bianca was nominated twice for Webby awards. In 1997 they were nominated under Sex and in 1998 for Community. The Sex category no longer appears on the Webby site, but I found video of the 1997 Webby Awards; the announcement of their award can be seen circa 17:15-18:10.
