Chemical Properties

The statement "Benzocaine is an ester from the Benzodiazepine drug family" is unreferenced and on basis of chemical structure is very likely incorrect. I have removed it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.61.31.183 (talk) 06:13, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why did you delete the part about how it relieves pain?

An addition to the cautions section - I just used a small droplet of benzocaine gel (Anbesol Max-Strength Benzocaine 20%) to numb some severe tooth pain.

It worked like a charm, relieving my toothache in seconds and causing a side effect of excess salivation. By reflex, I swallowed. Hooo boy - within a half minute I was feeling GOOD!

Today's lesson - when you use this stuff, don't use too much AND have a cup nearby to spit in. If your reflexes get the better of you, you might just end up with a full-body float.

sorry i messed it up... please revert, but note that benzocaine is not used in condoms, funny though that may sound - it's an ANAESTHETIC! Meconium 19:54, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes it is.

Simply pondering, seeing that it prevents nerve endings from communicating with the brain, could the correct amount of Benzocaine hypothetically cause temporary blindness if applied to the eyes?--67.174.179.226 19:47, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but it would have to get it to the retina or the optic nerve. You'd could inject it into the vitreous humor...but I really don't want you to do any of this. --justing magpie 20:12, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Other Uses edit

Reverted the page to take out the section about Benzocaine being used as a cutting agent for cocaine, no source citing and I rather doubt that a verifiable source will exist from which to cite from.Shyran 19:45, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mergers edit

As per WP:MEDMOS generally articles on specific brands should be avoided and a single article on the active ingredients under an article named for the INN should be used. Then that article may list notable brands. Clearly there may be exceptions, where the brand is particularly notable, especially if it covers a range of products (hence tylenol as well as paracetamol, MacDonalds as well as beefburger).

Proposed therefore to redirect here are:

Too Much Information, More Information edit

It sounds rather sounds peculiar and unprofessional to go into such detail about Benzocaine's use in sex, that is, barring expansion of the whole section with a bunch of other (non-sexual) uses.

Benzocaine is not cocaine, but how similar/different are they chemically?

"how it relieves pain" edit

is it just me or does that section title seem a bit unencyclopedaic? Alecjw (talk) 10:06, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

agreed, especially as it is an anaesthetic, not an analgesic. Murdochious (talk) 21:18, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Boiling point edit

A bp of 172 °C at normal pressure is by far too low for such a molecule (look for the bps of aniline and benzoic acid ethyl ester...). D'Ans-Lax says: about 310 °C. --FK1954 (talk) 19:57, 10 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dry skin itch edit

I remember a Lanacane commercial advertising it as a treatment for dry skin itch. Wolf O'Donnel (talk) 06:14, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Really old brand names? edit

I vaguely remember a brand name "Barbacaine" (obvious pun, see Barber%27s_pole article) instead of Benzocaine. Googling this leads me to believe I mis-remembered or that it is really, really obscure. Can anyone confirm if this was a brand name of Benzocaine, and if so, provide citations? The last time I saw the bottle was decades ago, so it might be hard to find. I figure it might help those looking for other antique containers(yes, people collect anything). Thanks! 47.221.237.206 (talk) 06:06, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
