I have added a short note concerning the relationship between Snow's and Ward Richardson's to reflect the current view of medical historians. Together Snow and Ward Richardson substantially created anaesthesiology in the c19th. Modern historians regard Snow's work as the foundation of Ward Richardson's and from his own writings, so did he. I guess Ward Richardson himself would have been dismayed, had he read his posthumous entry in DNB, to find no reference to his friend; he was a tireless campaigner for Snow's recognition throughout his life
