editGenuine query: hasn't Hammersley been to University? If he has, it's misleading to say he was educated at 'x grammar school', and if he hasn't, it would be interesting to mention this, as it is unusual for someone of his background, bent, occupation and interests not to have done so.82.42.80.57
Good point - I've added that in. Yes, self-editing is bad, but who else would know? Ben Hammersley
Wow, there are some seriously self-effacing self edits going on on this page... He invented podcasting? Maybe, but perhaps "he invented orientalist video package-making" might be a better edit....
Did Ben Hammersley himself write all of this entry? I can't see him referred to in many other places that he didn't produce. I haven't put the tag questioning notability onto the page but I'm close. Anyone else get that feeling? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.152.249.11 (talk) 13:23, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, On our (not-for-profit) site, www.journalisted.com, we’ve got more information about this journalist, with links to their articles and information on who’s blogging and commenting on them. We don’t want to get a conflict of interest note, so please feel free to add this link (http://www.journalisted.com/ben-hammersley) if you think it would be useful to other Wikipedians. Thanks! Self-publicising joke?
editAlmost all of this article reads something like...
- I'm such an amazing guy. I've done so many amazing things.
Following the link to his own web site you find it full of more of the same: all self-aggrandising with, actually, pretty shallow sources if you look beneath the surface.
An example in this article, he refers to himself as a 'diplomat'. When you investigate you find he's 'A diplomat, but not as we know it, Jim,' to paraphrase a famous Star Trek quote.
He doesn't work in the Diplomatic Service (as a real UK diplomat would), and never has. Instead, he has one of the short-term titles currently fashionable in UK politics. When a politician wants to invent a new sound-bite they will often create a short-term role which enables them to claim they are 'taking action'. In this case the role is 'Ambassador to East London Tech City'. This actually refers to an area near a roundabout in London which the current Prime Minister has decided, seemingly arbitrarily, will become an international hub of technology. Articles have mocked the idea, stating that the area has little more than a few web design companies and bars with young wanna-be-rich 'nontrepreneurs', and questioned why areas with well-established technology development have been overlooked.
So, to inflate the part-time sound-bite role to 'diplomat' is a gross exaggeration.
The rest of the article is peppered with unsourced and similarly inflated 'attributions' and claims, which, taken together, attempt to convey the impression that the still-young author is a remarkably successful author, photographer, athlete, diplomat, etc., etc., etc. - in fact, a sort of superman, rather than a university dropout who has flitted from job to job with a somewhat Walter Mitty-esque view of is own 'success'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.160.219.91 (talk) 17:15, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
