Belle Monte

Why does every article in English Wikipedia featuring the name "Belmont" seemingly include a derivation from the French belle monte? The truth is (a) not that and (b) both more and less complicated. Belmont derives from the French Belmont. Bel means 'beautiful', mont means 'mountain'. In standard French, this would normally be Beaumont, but the regional variant Belmont occurs in scads of places. By contrast, monte is 'mount' in the sense of mounting a horse or donkey – it's not what the place Belmont derives from. Q·L·1968 18:32, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
