Citations to the same book

edit

There are a great many citations to the same book. I propose to replace them by repeated named links <ref name=dupuis/>{{rp|183-185}} to a single citation;[1]: 183–185  this will shorten the list of references, and make it clear that the citations are to the same work. Instead of a separate citation for each page, there would be a named citation followed by a page number using the {{rp}} template. I have embedded a couple of examples in this comment. There are other ways to avoid multiple repeated citations which could alternatively be used.[1]: foreword ix .

  1. ^ a b Dupuis, Victor César Eugène (1907). Les opérations militaires sur la Sambre en 1794: Bataille de Fleurus (in French). https://archive.org/details/lesoprationsmil00histgoog/mode/2up: R. Chapelot et Cie. {{cite book}}: External link in |location= (help)CS1 maint: location (link)

I'm all for it because I'm really tired of doing individual citations, but I'm really not code-minded enough to handle these Wiki coding things--I'm definitely much better at interpreting historical maps, identifying historical locations and writing up the articles themselves than applying all the myriad programmings and templates that Wiki is full of--is someone able to assist with this? Okay I have figured it out--and it's much more elegant now! Thank you for the suggestion. Took me some time to get it but it works great. Talamioros (talk) 07:24, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I've added the Ferraris map to the list of references. I suggest changing the references in the text. Just once we will have, for example,

<ref name=ferraris>Ferraris 1777</ref>{{rp|#66: Merbes le Chateau}}
"Ferrari 1777" refers to the entry in the list of references.
All subsequent references would be like
<ref name=ferraris/>{{rp|#81: Charleroi}}
Obviously some references would have the same {{rp}} section number/name

(I've added examples in the next paragraph) I don't want[1]: #66: Merbes le Chateau  to do this myself in case it meets with disapproval, with the present scheme preferred,[1]: #81: Charleroi  and has to be removed (as has happened on other[1]: #66: Merbes le Chateau  pages).

There are other ways to do this, essentially just putting (Ferraris map 1777, #81: Charleroi) in the text without <ref ... >
