About the capture of the Huascar edit

The article originally stated than the Huascar's crew surrender to the Chilean boarding party, an this is incorrect, the remaining officers launch their weapons and the war flag of the ship into the sea tied with a cannon ball precisely to prevent being used by the Chilean boarding party as a proof of the surrender of the ship. The execution of the scuttling order was also an indicator of the crew's intention of never surrender the vessel. Greetings --Cloudaoc (talk) 23:56, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

the Huascar had to be eliminated along with Admiral Grau. Where does the belief that admiral Grau had to be eliminated comes from? I doubt it is based in any Historic records or texts... (IP User)

  • The Primary Goal of the Chilean Navy during the war of the Pacific was to achieve supremacy in the sea. The ironclad Huascar along with Admiral Grau was a terrible obstacle to those plans. Revolledo was removed from his post as commander of the Chilean Navy because he had failed to terminate that peruvian threat. Sotomayor, the next offices, was the mastermind behind the ambush in Angamos. You can look on chilean records, and you will find that that was the main idea. Messhermit 14:54, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

As far as I know, the idea of killing Grau was not essential to the plan. I haven't found any information backing this view on history books. I have deleted that part of the phrase.--200.29.39.69 19:18, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Both Huascar and his admiral were a menace to the chilean war effort. Messhermit 20:41, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, if the objective was to achieve naval supremacy, the Chilean Navy has to eliminate the threat that the Huascar and Grau represented. This doesn't necessary means to kill Grau (capturing him and capture or sink the Huascar could be reasonable alternatives). Chilean history books have a great opinion about Grau: not only his tactical genius and sagacity is recognised but also his high moral stature when he helped the survivors of the Esmeralda in Iquique and due the fact he personally wrote Prat's widow and arranged to send Prat's personal things to her. baloo_rch 03:46, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
