I'll get to this shortly.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 09:23, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I'm looking forward to your comments. Ammodramus (talk) 03:15, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry that this is taking so long: April 15 is fast approaching, and Form 1040 is eating up a lot of what would ordinarily be editing time. Please excuse the slow progress on this. Ammodramus (talk) 00:51, 13 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Three dead links that need to be fixed.
Did you by chance note which links these were, e.g. by citation number? Ammodramus (talk) 00:15, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Click on the external links in the box on the upper right of this page. That's the tool that verifies links.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 00:43, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I didn't know about that. It'll be useful when I do my next GA review. Ammodramus (talk) 00:51, 13 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Added links to Wayback Machine archived copies for dead links. Ammodramus (talk) 14:32, 13 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • No dismbiguation links and overlinking.
  • Photos appropriately licensed.
  • A more detailed map of the battery and the bay is desperately needed.
I heartily agree. Unfortunately, I don't know how to produce one, and there doesn't seem to be a map of Winyah Bay at Commons. Ammodramus (talk) 00:15, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
See what you can find on Google image, etc. and we can see if it can be uploaded to Commons. Any US Govt map is copyright free and won't cause any problems for use there.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:58, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'd really like to incorporate two maps into the article. The first would be a long view of Winyah Bay, showing Georgetown, Battery White, North and South and Cat Islands, and possibly the various rivers (including perhaps the two mouths of the Santee) and the location of the Harvest Moon. The second would be a close-up of the Battery White site, showing the locations of the various fortification elements, guns, etc.
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find anything for the second. At the Battery White "Documentation" page are a couple of maps; but they chiefly show the battery site relative to the condominium complex. Neither of these strikes me as providing the information that we'd want for the article. There may be an 1860s map of the fortifications buried somewhere in Washington or Richmond, but I can't find anything useful online.
I think I can generate a decent Winyah Bay map, beginning with a tracing of the USGS topo in Inkscape. However, this may take a while, since I don't know Inkscape at all. I'm in the process of going through the tutorials, but it may take a while before I can produce an acceptable map. May I ask that the GA review be left open until then? I'll post notes at this page at intervals of a week or less, so that you'll know that I haven't abandoned the project. Ammodramus (talk) 23:18, 20 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Email me, I know someone who's proficient in Inkscape and may be willing to help.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 23:50, 20 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Very belatedly, thanks for this. Is this someone who'd be willing to take on the task of producing the map, or just someone to turn to for advice on how to do tracing, etc.? I'm steaming through the tutorials, but there's lots to learn, and when I do produce a map I want it to be a good one. Ammodramus (talk) 21:09, 27 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've made it through most of the relevant tutorials and have begun experimenting with the map itself. It's not going to go quickly, but it is going. Thanks for your patience with my slow progress. Ammodramus (talk) 19:28, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
A competent Inkscape hand could probably have done this in a couple of hours instead of the three weeks or so that it took me; but I think I've finally got an adequate map up. Think that's the last point that needed addressing; could I ask you to look the article over and, assuming no further problems, sign off on the GA? Thanks once again for your constructive advice and for the considerable patience you've had to show in this process; your efforts are appreciated. Ammodramus (talk) 23:33, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • What types of ships are Albatross and Norwich? In general it's a good idea to provide the ship type each time a new ship is introduced.
Could you elaborate on what sort of descriptions we're looking for? Is a one-word characterization like "gunboat" or "sloop" sufficient (in light of the fact that we've got Wikilinks for all of them)?
I've added brief descriptions, with citations. Ammodramus (talk) 16:00, 16 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Is a listing of the guns at the battery available?
Dahlgren's report, on p. 277 of this source (cited in the article) describes the guns in the water battery and several more defending it from landward attack. Your userpage suggests that you know artillery much better than I do; could I ask you to look at Dahlgren's paragraph and insert an appropriate list/description in an appropriate place in the article? Ammodramus (talk) 00:15, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's not so hard. Just move the parenthetical banded to positions in front of the size of gun, add links to rifled and smoothbore (all guns not specifically noted as rifled) and paraphrase the rest of the information.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 10:32, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think I've fixed this. Since you know more about fortifications and artillery than I, could you check to make sure that I haven't inadvertently introduced nonsense? Ammodramus (talk) 00:51, 13 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Remember to use endashes between ranges of numbers, like page numbers, dates, etc.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 21:55, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Done. Ammodramus (talk) 14:06, 13 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Everything looks good aside from the absence of a map. Don't worry about time, I have friends who are tax attorneys and they're totally tied up for weeks around tax day.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:19, 16 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
