The result of the move request was: page moved and dab created, WP:TWODABS only applies if there is a primary topic. If there's no primary topic, a dab goes at the base name even for two entries. -- JHunterJ (talk) 17:03, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bathurst IslandBathurst Island (Canada)Bathurst Island (Northern Territory) is just as well known as the one in Canada, so this should be moved. 124.169.118.113 (talk) 13:04, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment I have requested that the one in Australia be named as such, since people here seem to prefer using countries. 70.49.124.147 (talk) 04:16, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. The Australian island is actually more notable. It got 5,200 page views in the last 90 days, compared to 3,200 for the Canadian island. But what's the point of adding disambiguation if there is no plan to put the base name to good use? If there are only two options, there is no need for a DAB page. The "support" side assumes that if a subject is not the most sought after topic, then it should have parenthetical disambiguation. But Wiki has no rule of this kind. According to WP:PRECISION, we should use parentheticals only when other methods of disambiguation are "not possible". Kauffner (talk) 10:31, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Support No Clear Primary Topic. Zarcadia (talk) 10:47, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Support -- the Canadian valley should not have pride of place. It might be 16 times larger, but it is uninhabited. Geo Swan (talk) 02:39, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

follow-up move edit

I've followed up the move with a move to (Nunavut) as the qualifier, per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (places): "Places are often disambiguated by the country in which they lie, if this is sufficient. However, when tags are required for places in Argentina (except province capitals that are named like the province), Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Federated States of Micronesia, South Africa or the United States, use the name of the state, province, territory, region (Italy only) or county (Ireland only), or department (France only) if the place lies within a single such entity." -- JHunterJ (talk) 10:56, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

As I read the guideline, we can disambiguate by country, "if this is sufficient." If you asked people: "Nunavut or Northern Territory, which one sounds like a place in Canada?" I bet most non-Canadians would say "Northern Territory." If you're going by NCGN, it shouldn't be a parenthetical, but more like this: Nancy, France or Greenstone, Ontario. Kauffner (talk) 12:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
As per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Disambiguation. "With the names of cities, towns, villages and other settlements, as well as administrative divisions, the tag is normally preceded by a comma, as in Hel, Poland, and Polk County, Tennessee. Any specific national convention takes precedence though." and "With natural features, the tag normally appears in parentheses, as in Eagle River (Colorado). Specific pre-existing national conventions may take precedence though." So the parentheses here would be correct. What does GN stand for in NCGN? Did you mean GG?
