bath locks pump

edit

The text currently reads "Alongside the lock is a side pond and pumping station which pumps water up the locks to replace that used each time the lock is opened[2]" but the reference is to a former engine house. Can someone please clarify if backpumping is still in operation here? Derek Andrews 10:47, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

ditto the pump at lock 12. If these are disused it should say so. Derek Andrews 10:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
alongside lock 7 (at the bottom) there is still a pump - I believe it's electric - which I think is the main/only one these days. The one by lock 12 is the old steam chimney - I believe this one to be disused but I don't have a source to back this up.— Rod talk 11:27, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
The original arrangement (c.1972) was that locks 8 and 9 were not restored by volunteer labour and that the road authority (council? MOT? DoE?) paid for the new deep lock. As part of this agreement the road authority had to provide and pay for the pumpback in perpetuity. As a boat descends the flight it carries one standard lock of water with it. At deep lock it passes two lockfulls down, and the pound above would quickly empty without the pumpback. IIRC, Mike Smallwood was the leading light in the agreement, but it was 40+ years ago and I was only a lowly schoolboy volunteer. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 23:37, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
