To Do edit

I was rather unhappy with the state of this article. I believed the previous version neither accurately, nor sufficiently described the theory. I have attempted to improve the article, but there are several things that can be added:

  • A figure illustrating the model (I'm thinking something like figure 7.3 from Coybe and Orr).
  • A better description of the model, including the use of loci (Aa, Bb). I could just plagiarize the description in Coyne and Orr, but would rather not.
  • Better examples. Mules are not a valid example because infertility is cause by a difference in chromosome number between horse and donkey, not BDM interactions . I think there are papers (although not a lot) which claim to detail the discovery of BDM interactions in hybrid populations.

Removal of reference to Heterozygosity edit

I removed the statement "It assumes a selective pressure against a combination of alleles in the heterozygous state, i.e. F1 hybrids have reduced fertility or viability." because this is not what the theory states. In fact, an allele can be homozygous and cause hybrid sterility or decreased fitness (although this is difficult to have happen) because of its incompatibility with another homozygous allele from a different background. BDM describes something totally different from heterozygous disadvantage, namely that hybrid incompatibility arises from the interactions of alleles at two or more loci which arose independently in two allopatric populations.
