Serbia is successor of Yugoslavia edit

Serbia is the successor of Yugoslavia, by law, and all medals won under SFRY or FRY or SCG goes under Serbia! Correct it please. Just as Russia is sucessor of USSR, and so forth...109.121.55.161 (talk) 11:50, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Some association recognize SFRY medals as Serbian, but everyone recognize FRY and S&M medals as Serbian, so it should be corrected, especially on the map... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.244.147.76 (talk) 12:37, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please do not be dumb. Adjectives like Serbian, Yugoslavian, Austrian, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Greek, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Slovakian, and Turkish are ALWAYS CAPITALIZED in English. Why is it that all Eastern Europeans cannot conform to this simple rule in English? Just capitalize them automatically without even wondering about it -- because this is what we do.

That somehow Serbia is the successor of Yugoslavia is VERY QUESTIONABLE. Also, there is no reason for it. In contrast, Russia inherited the seat on the Security Council from the Soviet Union, so that was important. Also, the genuine government of Germany was the Federal Republic of Germany, and East Germany simply vanished as a former puppet regime of the USSR. On the other hand, Yugoslavia simply splintered into a half-dozen different countries, none of which is more important than the others.

Does anyone know how WP:OLY handles this? This is contentious not only here but in other basketball pages (as "who" inherits, if anyone, SFR Yugoslavia's records, and if SRB inherits FR Yugoslavia's and SCG's. –HTD 18:32, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

The answer is NO. The IOC doesn't recognize any "successors". "All Summer and Winter Olympic medals of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire were inherited by Russia, but NOT COMBINED together with the medal count of the Russian Federation". In fact, Sabonis, Marčiulions, Chomičius and Kurtinaitis and many other prominent "russian" players were from Lithuania. Straw Poll on Results Summaries table edit

This is a straw poll to gauge opinion on the style of results summaries table, which whether to use the current revision or this revision

Please sign your name using four tildes (~~~~) with either Support (revision linking) or Oppose (current revision), additonal comments are appreciated. --Aleenf1 08:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

To add some more clarity to the purpose of this poll: I maintain that the "width=100%" specification for the results table causes the table to stretch on widescreen displays and results in a terrible rendering. If this HTML phrase is removed, the table renders nicely on both 4:3 and 16:10 aspect ratios, which should be satisfactory to everybody. User:Aleenf1 refuses to accept this improvement for reasons unknown (except perhaps that it is not "common" with some non-Olympic pages).
The other point, which User:Aleenf1 omitted from the poll, is that I believe the "font=90%" specification is unnecessary, and causes legibility issues. As per WP:MOS#Formatting issues, the use of an alternate font size is not recommended (only "if you absolutely must") because of consistency and usability reasons.
Therefore, a better version to base your opinion is this one. Andrwsc 16:25, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removal of Venues section edit

Someone chose to remove the section listing all the venues. We can discuss whether the article should or should not have this information, but major changes like this should be discussed, and a consensus reached, before making such a change.--SPhilbrickT 12:43, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Olympic Flags for Spain & Italy edit

Why do Spain and Italy have the Olympic flag, rather than their national flags? Grande (talk) 22:58, 27 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think this was during the Olympic boycotts; instead of boycotting, they competed under the Olympic flag. When I edited those, other Olympic articles denoted those two teams, and the others that followed suit, had the Olympic flags displayed instead of their national flags. –HTD 03:50, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Poland - women's team in 1976 ?? edit

Poland - women's team in 1976 ??
According to the article on women's basketball in 1976, POLAND DID NOT EVEN HAVE A TEAM IN THE TOURNAMENT!
Please get this straight. The women's basketball tournament in 1976 was a small one, with only one round-robin pool, and no playoffs. The six teams were from the USSR, the USA, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Japan, and Canada.
We do not need disinformation: there is no way that a Polish team could have finished in fourth place.

I've looked for when this mistake occurred, but got lazy and changed it. You're right, and the Czechoslovaks should've been there. –HTD 18:24, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

history - women edit

In the History->Women section all there is is the useless snetence " Women

They won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics." Kdammers (talk) 13:35, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Qualifying edit

Perhaps this is simply unknown, but I'd be very interested in reading more about how teams qualified for each Olympic tournament in the past. In recent years, the coverage is good, but there's nothing for older Olympics. Perhaps the information doesn't exist any longer, but if it does, I'm one reader who would be interested in reading it. Winning Percentage edit

The numbers in the columns marked "Winning Percentage" are not in fact percentages. Either the column header should be changed or the numbers should be converted to percentages.Ordinary Person (talk) 02:12, 11 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

In basketball, at least in North American usage, winning percentages are actually denoted by the nearest hundredths. –HTD 02:27, 21 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Rules section edit

I think it would be useful to add a section, or at least relevant links, that explain the rules for basketball in the olympics and compare them to, for example NBA rules, since these have sometimes lead to polemic discussions (for example the amount of steps, distances,...) What do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:88:6D29:C100:889B:1D89:87A0:600C (talk) 17:48, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

ROC on the medal tables edit

Are these supposed to be added with Russia, or separate or something else? Howard the Duck (talk) 15:18, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
