The Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida is a Catholic basilica located in the Brazilian city of Aparecida. According to local tradition, a group of fishermen caught a statue of the Virgin Mary in their nets in 1717, a find which considerably improved their subsequent catches. One of the fishermen kept the statue at his home, which became a popular site for pilgrims. A small chapel was built to house it, but was replaced by successively larger churches as the statue's popularity grew. The present building was built from 1955, and houses 45,000 people.Photograph: Valter Campanato, Agência Brasil.

Tigraan provided an helpful overview of coverage in English-language media, and most things being equal, I concur with them and BD2412 that this is the most WP:CONCISE solution. Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida → Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady Aparecida – Procedural nomination per this Help Desk request. Note that the cathedral denomination was granted in 2016. I myself weakly oppose the move, because based on an online search for "National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida", most English sources use the "basilica" title alone, which suggests a WP:COMMONNAME reason not to move. On the other hand, while Portuguese sources do not control under COMMONNAME, it is also clear that there are much fewer English sources than Portuguese sources. I oppose the move. The article's title should not be the "official name" of the subject, but the name by which it is most commonly known in reputable English-language sources. This appears to be the "Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida ". Maproom (talk) 15:51, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Tigraan can you correct the move request that you made? In fact, what was requested in the page that you mentioned is that the name should be "Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida" and not the full name. As said, a page in Wikipedia not necessarily is the full name of a place/location, but what people recognize as popular. Therefore, since the Cathedral title was granted in 2016, people started more and more to address as "Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida", although the official name is "Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida". Being a Portuguese speaker this is especially true when you visit in person the location and the guides and locals refers as mentioned. Sorry about that misrepresentation of your position, 84.241.193.184. Your post here is sufficient to correct it. Summing up, since nobody wants to move to the title in the move request, we have three options:

1. Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida (status quo)
2. Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida (Maproom's suggestion)
3. Cathedral basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida (84.241.193.184's suggestion, without a capital B to basilica)

I searched a couple of English-language news sites for "Our Lady of Aparecida". Results below. I found no hits before the 2016 cathedral designation, which therefore does not support #3, but on the other hand even a post-2016 minor newspaper article should be given more weight than pre-2016 hits in major newspapers (per WP:NAMECHANGES).

1. BBC uses "shrine of OLoA" ([1], [2]); I would say that supports #1 more than #2
2. The Guardian uses either #1 or #2 in image captions depending on the photographer Getty Images photograph uses #1, Reuters photograph uses #2
3. No hits in the New York Times except a letter to the editor that uses #2
4. Washington Post uses #1
5. Reuters consistently uses #2 ([3], [4])

All in all I do not find any strong evidence either way for 1 vs 2. I would weakly support 2 for stylistic reasons. Tigraan^{Click here to contact me} 08:59, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

As you mentioned Tigraan, there are way less english speaking newspapers saying about the Cathedral Basilica of our Lady Aparecida, in São Paulo state (there are some news about the Metropolitan Cathedral of Aparecida, this other in Brasilia) especially because there is no interest for english speakers to know if a church in Brazil got the title of Cathedral or not. But the fact is that independently of the news or the official name, for the few english speakers that know about it and for the massive portuguese speakers, the popular name is "Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady Aparecida". If is matter of proving, there are portuguese newspapers telling about the 2016 new title, as well as the Vatican website (this last only in italian). https://arqaparecida.org.br/Imprensa/Noticia/33-Santu%C3%A1rio%20Nacional%20%C3%A9%20a%20Catedral%20da%20Arquidiocese%20de%20Aparecida
