BTUK affiliation? edit

This union is affiliated to Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra, right? Is there a WP:RS to confirm this? --Soman (talk) 21:29, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I've had a look at some articles and you seem to be right - they are the same organisation. For example, in this article, the person cited as organising secretary of the Garment Workers Trade Union Kendra is Khairul Mamun Mintoo, while according to this article KM Mintu is the GWTUC's organising secretary. However, the correct name of the organisation does seem to be Bangladesh *Garment Workers* Trade Union Center / বাংলাদেশ *গার্মেন্ট শ্রমিক* ট্রেড ইউনিয়ন কেন্দ্র, so my proposed solution would be merging the Kendra page into this one. Would you agree with that? I'll also add some more sources to clear up any confusion. Thanks for the suggestion! Zarasophos (talk) 09:14, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and another thing: I'd like to reinstate the link to National trade union center in the lede, since, well, that seems to be what GWTUC is? According to that article, centers are still unions themselves, so I'd like to link to that page instead of the more general Trade Union to clear up potential confusion about why the GWTUC is called GW Trade Union Center. Do you agree with that? Zarasophos (talk) 09:35, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
A trade union centre is a body with different unions as its members. This union is one union, presumably an affiliate of BTUK. But BTUK and GWTUC/GWTUK are separate organizations and should have separate articles. --Soman (talk) 01:18, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Am in agreement with Soman. GWTUC is not a national trade union centre (also referred to as a central); the equivalents in the UK, Sweden or Germany would be the TUC (UK), LO and TCO and SACO (Sweden) or DGB (Germany). GWTUC is an industrial federation which as far as I can see is affiliated to the BTUK/BTUC.--Goldsztajn (talk) 04:05, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to both of you for the feedback! I didn't understand the difference between federation and centre, that clears it up, thank you. And do you have any sources on the relation between BTUK and GWTUC? Otherwise I'd just leave it at a "affiliated at" because I really don't understand their relationship right now. I'd also like to move the "Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra" article to "Bangladesh Trade Union Center", since Bangladeshi sources in English refer to them like that more often. The confusing aspect of the name of Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra is that it is a name that includes both English ('trade union') and Bengali ('kendra') elements, but notably the term 'tred yuniyan' is a loan word in Bangla from English. Here it shows a banner with the name given as 'bangladesh tred iuniyan kendra (ti.iu.si)', indicating that it uses the English abbreviation 'TUC' even in Bangla... Now, none of these articles should be at the American 'Center', rather 'Centre' should be used. --Soman (talk) 12:36, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Definitely agree with you on the confusing names part, though for me the really confusing thing was just that the two are called the same with a "Garment Workers" inserted in the one. As for Center vs. Centre - it's very weird. I knew Bangladesh uses British spelling, which is why I sandboxed this page with "Centre", but then I remember coming across several Bangladeshi sources that used "Center" and changing it. But when I check now, all Bangladeshi articles use "Centre". Another error on my part, I'll fix it immediately. Zarasophos (talk) 21:47, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
