Talk:Backyard railroad

American English? edit

Is this term normal in any part of the English speaking world other than the USA? Globbet (talk) 00:14, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Very good question, Globbet, but I think that your assumption about the terminology in the USA is wrong. As an American, I think "Backyard railroad" is not a common term here either. We call them "Garden railroads" and most other English speakers call them "Garden railways" I believe. I think the articles should be merged under the existing name Garden railway with a comment that "Garden railroad" is a common term in the USA. Cullen328 (talk) 03:24, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Merge with Garden railway? edit

Shouldn't this article be merged with Garden railway? Cullen328 (talk) 03:20, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I think not. A garden rairoad is smaller scale, not ridable, while a backyard one is usually ridable. (Small distinction, but important IMO.) --Janke | Talk 05:09, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Don't. These are different things. Garden railway are a subset of Backyard railroad. Backyard railroad - also include large-scale models (such as 1:4-1:12). Garden railway limited the scale of 1:16. In an extreme case - 1:12, provided that the road is not ridable. An article on backyard railroad should be expanded. Also in the article on Live Steam should write a piece about the use of smoke simulation engine (not only) for small scale models (such as - H0, Z, N), and garden railway. And it is not IMO, this opinion, knowledge of the professional building a Backyard railroad in all their diversity.Зелёный Кошак 18:45, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
