Guns in Spain edit

Are the 15 inch guns made by Vickers in the 1920s mounted in the Cenizas battery near Cartagena in Spain the same guns as these? They have been preserved and are worth a visit as their location atop a 1,000 foot cliff is excellent. Information on these guns can be found at the following website: http://www.simplynetworking.es/calida-3079-64-9-cartagena_the_cenizas_and_negrete_batteries_near_to.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigershoot (talkcontribs) 22:51, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

UK 15 inch 42 cal naval gun - supercharging edit

I understand from various sources, including the book "The Big Gun(s) (?)" that the RN's 15" 42 cal guns could be supercharged, and that there were various levels of supercharge used (some of which may have reduced barrel life to 3 rounds only). Does anyone know:

  • the weight/mass of supercharge that could be added to the normal charge,
  • the weight/mass of supercharge that was allowed for in VANGUARD and the ROYAL SOVERIGN Class battlewaggons (?these could be different),
  • the weight/mass of supercharge that was used in army weapons (I think this was much higher), and
  • the resulting muzzle velocity/muzzle energy in each (or any) case?
  • the range possible in each (or any) case?
  • the effect of supercharging on the 6CR shells (1938lbs(?)) vide the 4CR shells (1920lbs(?))ditto?

See here for a good starting point. I think you'd have to get your hands on a copy of Campbell's "Naval Weapons" for a definitive answer. Emoscopes Talk 12:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spains 15 inch guns edit

Spain ordered 18 15" Vickers Guns in 1926, all as coastal artillery. They were then shipped over to Spain in the 30s. There were 6 of these guns in Minorca: two in Fortress of Isabel II(La Mola Mahon)one of which is open to the public, two in Llucalari on the south coast of <Minorca (closed to the public) and two in Favaritx or there were eight in Galicia and four in Cartagena. After the Spanish civil war two guns were dismantled in Ferrol and transferred to Paloma Alta near Tarifa, one of which suffered problems in the initial trials, so the two guns from Favaritx inMinorca were dismantled and sent to Paloma Alta. The guns in Paloma Alta continued in use up until 2008. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.18.47.105 (talk) 14:52, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
