Population

Is the population 60,830 or 46,431? The info box at the side says the lower number and the opening paragraph says the larger.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.206.14.47 (talk • contribs).

The 2001 census data says 46,431 - the higher figure most likely includes the wider Ayr area rather than just the town itself. I have changed the figure to match the infobox number. SFC9394 16:01, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

The population of Ayr is said to be 48,000 in the opening of the atricle, yet the census data at the righthand side claims it as 46,050. It is also said to be "by far the largest settlement in Ayrshire" which I feel is an incorrect use of language. It is the largest settlement but not "by far" the largest. Kilmarnock has less than a 2,000 poulation difference according to the 2001 census. 92.5.100.135 (talk) 06:18, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Ayr College

The page says it was also called Ayr Technical College, at one time it was also called Craigie College if I'm not mistaken. Douglasnicol 22:26, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Ayr College was, as the article says, previously Ayr Technical College. Craigie College is a different and separate establishment, which was a teacher training college and is now the Ayr Campus of the University of the West of Scotland (formerly Paisley University). quizologist (talk) 10:49, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Places of Worship

There is another church in Ayr constituted under the Baptist Union of Scotland, called Southside Christian Fellowship, who currently meet in one of the secondary schools, Kyle Academy, which should probably be included. United Kingdom

I think that it is necessary to mention the fact that Ayr is located within the United Kingdom in the opening line of the article, primarily because Ayr is currently located within the sovereign unitary state of the United Kingdom which is currently, whether it is politically controversial or not, the primary legislative power for this area above the Scottish Parliament. This would be in line with articles such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. Brythones (talk) 17:11, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

"Largest" or "second largest"

Until this [1] unsourced edit in October, 2020 the lead claimed that Ayr was the "largest settlement in Ayrshire". Since then there have been multiple back and forth changes from "largest" to "second largest". Neither side has sourced their claims, and neither side has discussed the content, so I've simply removed the claim, and started the discussion until consensus has been reached.

It appears to me that Ayr is indeed the largest settlement in Ayrshire. Which place has a larger population? (Since the claim starts off with "With a population of ..." it's clear this claim is population-based and not area-based.)Meters (talk) 00:39, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
