Establishing notability

edit

Ayoka Chenzira has been interviewed in two books on black film making, and has been a lecturer at several universities. Early articles (cited in text) grouped her together with Spike Lee in terms of relevance to black film. For this reason, I believe she is notable, with enough supporting sources, for inclusion in Wikipedia. ---Owlsmcgee (talk) 02:27, 4 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Expansion

edit

As part of a Women Directors class assignment, I chose to research and write a Wikipedia article for filmmaker Ayoka Chenzira. Now that a page has been initiated for her by contributor Owlsmcgee (talk), I intend to expand on it using journals and entries from the International Index to Film Periodicals Database, the St. James Women Filmmakers Encyclopedia, the Film & Television Literature Index, and Quarterly Review of Film and Video, among other third-party sources. --Cue95 (talk) 00:08, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

That's super cool, User:Cue95! Just a heads up: I removed the exact birthdate, because Wikipedia doesn't use them for biographies of living people. (Someone could use that for nefarious purposes). I also reworded a sentence you added to the lead, which felt a little too promotional -- wikipedia aims for a neutral tone, so it's best to just explain what critics have said, without making it sound like Wikipedia agrees with those assessments. So the sentence changed from:
  • Before: "Her work, as well as her efforts as an educator, would make many consider her a media activist for challenging and freeing the representations of African Americans and the exclusionary, one-dimensional practices and stereotypes in mainstream media."
  • After: "Her work, as well as her efforts as an educator, have lead some in the press to describe her as a media activist for challenging representations of African American stereotypes in the mainstream media."

The difference is that we're saying that a specific group of people said that, and citing it, rather than "us" saying it. That way, we're keeping to the facts when it comes to her work, also without offering commentary on African-American stereotypes. (I agree with you, but that's not what matters on Wikipedia, the idea is that we want to present facts, not opinions, whenever possible). Thanks for helping out on this article! ---Owlsmcgee (talk) 06:42, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

How to improve this article

edit

You have contributed some great content to this page already, however to improve this article you need to expand on your prose to reach 500 words (so far you've contributed approximately 125 words).

You also need to clarify where you found some of your content--for instance "Chenzira married choreographer Thomas Osha Pinnock, whom she collaborates with often in her production and distribution company Red Carnelian. They have a daughter together named Haj." Where did you find this information?

You also need to fix some of your citations (for instance, you should remove the database from the Gateward citation and the Black Film Review citation -- add an author to the latter, and a URL if it's online, otherwise remove retrieval date). --110laurent (talk) 03:55, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review

edit

This is an excellent page. It provides great insight into this filmmaker's life and career. All facts are presented in a neutral manner, and are concise. Great emphasis on some of her key works and achievements. It is able to convey relevance and notability with unbiased sources. Sources are substantive, unbiased, and well researched. One problem is that there are no links to her films. It would be preferable to have her works be linked to wiki pages or imdb pages. The reader needs to be provided access to more information about her films. Other then that the page is well researched, presented in an organized manner, and is substantive.
