Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative

The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative[1] was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has been fighting pollution and climate change for more than 20 years. The initiative aims to build awareness of the climate crisis and the urgent need to take action. It is located in Vienna, Austria and is led by its Director Monika Langthaler. The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative organizes the Austrian World Summit[2], one of the largest climate conferences worldwide[3]. The next Summit will take place on the 1st July 2021[4]. Concept The initiative aims to build awareness of the climate crisis and the urgent need to take action. It does this by supporting best practice climate protection projects, presenting workable solutions from all over the world and connecting these ideas with available technical and financial resources. The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative serves as a matchmaking platform connecting players from business, finance, NGOs and local and national governments at the Austrian World Summit and throughout the year.

Austrian World Summit

The Austrian World Summit is an international climate conference which takes places annually in Vienna since 2017 under the patronage of Austrian federal president Alexander Van der Bellen. It was held for the first three times at the Vienna Hofburg palace before taking place for the first time in the Spanish Ridding School in 2020. It aims to bring together stakeholders from politics, civil society and business to create a broad alliance for climate protection as well as showcasing concrete solutions to the climate crisis.

The conference wants to contribute to achieving a full implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals as well as networking politics, business and finances with the United Nations, NGOs, regions and cities. The Austrian World Summit has become one of the largest environmental gatherings in the world and provides a platform for highlighting concrete solutions and measures from global decision-makers committed to preserving a healthy planet and decarbonizing the economy by 2050.

The last conference of the AUSTRIAN WORLD SUMMIT took place on the 17th September 2020 and the focus was put on the opportunities of a green economy and the necessity of a green recovery[5]. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the conference was held via hybrid format, which enabled an international program of 27 speakers from 12 countries including Prince Charles of Wales[6], UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez, Jane Goodall, James Cameron and John Kerry. It was the biggest climate conference to take place in 2020 because of the cancellation of all major climate conferences due to the COVID-19 pandemic[3] Through the international media coverage, the Austrian World Summit 2020 had a potential reach of 1.3 billion people.[2] Previous participants of the conference were among others climat activist Greta Thunberg[7], Patricia Espinosa Cantellano (Executive Director of the UNFCC), Li Yong (Director General of UNIDO), Maria Neira (WHO Director), Kristalina Georgieva (Managing Director of the IMF) and Scott Joseph Kelly (US Astronaut).

Since 2019, the summit is accompanied by a festival for the public, a Climate Kirtag, which is supposed to raise awareness for climate issues among the public in Vienna. The first edition featured concerts by Hubert von Goisern and Conchita Wurst [8]where more than 10.000 spectators were attending. In 2020 the Climate Kirtag could be organised under strict Covid-19 regulation rules. A strict health and safety concept allowed bands like Lemo & Folkshilfe to perform in front of a live audience.

Climate Action Stories[9]

The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative presents projects that are already successfully contributing to climate protection and sustainable development. The aim of introducing these success stories is to inspire imitation so others will contribute to the transformation towards a low-carbon future. Their website presents more than 100 projects from all over the world with new stories constantly being added. Climate Action Talk

The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative interviews Climate Action Heroes who are role models in their contribution to climate protection and who inspire more and more people to become enthusiastic about fighting climate change. Guests of their Webtalks include former President of COP21 Laurent Fabius and former ski racer Felix Neureuther. The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative also publishes a high-quality newsletter every 2 months to inform about the latest happenings of the initiative and to draw attention to global developments in the field of climate protection. The subscription is open to everyone.

Legacy

In 2019, the conference won the European Culture Award Taurus for extraordinary contributions to European culture.[10] In 2020, the Austrian World Summit took place in September with 340 participants. It was the biggest climate conference to take place that year because of the cancellation of all major climate conferences due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]

• Explanation of issue: The Organizer of the Austrian World Summit has changed, it´s not the R20 regions anymore but the Schwarzenegger Climate initiative. All the changes made by an employee here of the initiative a necessary for a better understanding of the initiative and to remove the uncertainty for all people affilated with the initiative and to avoid confusion (happens often with journalist). If the text is approved, I would then edit the link of the keywords as soon as possible.
