Spelling

In earlier years, the common name I'd see the most was schnapper, I'm not suure when I first saw 'snapper' - Lu

According to the NZ Encyclopedia entry listed at the bottom that's a common mispelling. Richard001 22:54, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Pagrus auratus

In 1990, the paper "Pagrus auratus, a new combination for the species known as "snapper" in Australasian waters (Pisces: Sparidae)"[1] was published, and since this article, the Australasian snapper has been only referred to as Pagrus auratus by the scientific community. (Just do a google scholar search on both Chrysophrys auratus and Pagrus auratus - after 1990 the species is referred to as P. auratus, while before 1990 its C. auratus). Why fishbase hasn't caught up yet i don't know, but wikipedia should. I propose the article use P. auratus for the species binomial name. Thoughts? Kare Kare 14:46, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Pagrus

It seems that FishBase has relegated Pagrus to a junior synonym of Chrysophrys based on an opinion expressed in Eschmeyer (1998). As far as I am aware, nobody has published any formal taxonomic work to refute Paulin's (1990) use of Pagrus or his synonomy of the New Zealand, Australian and Japanese species (still often referred to as Pagrus major). FishBase's relegation of Pagrus auratus to a homonym therefore has no basis. Genetic work done by Tabata & Taniguchi (2000. Fisheries Science 6(1): 9-18) suggests that the japanese and australasian variants, although almost indistinguishable morphologically, might be treated as subspecies of P. auratus based on some genetic divergence. Either way, everybody who works with these fish accepts Paulin's work and uses Pagrus. Trevfish (talk) 04:17, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I notice that the Australian museum (http://www.austmus.gov.au/fishes/fishfacts/fish/pauratus.htm) uses pagrus auratus, but places like NCBI's genbank still uses chrysophrys auratus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.106.118.212 (talk) 03:37, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I did notice today Fishbase did change the genus to Pagrus.....Pvmoutside (talk) 12:57, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
