Sabine Pass

edit

I just removed a block from the main text of the article -- "Railroads" section, end of the second paragraph -- because it is a point of discussion and should be addressed here...

After this text...

Periodically Augustus' interests would meld. For instance, in 1880 he announced his desire to complete the Sabine and East Texas Railroad from Beaumont, Texas, through the Sabine Pass to Rockland, Texas. This enabled Kountze to market the 250,000 acres (1,000 km2) of virgin timber lands on land he owned in nearby counties.

...there was this comment...

(This statement is in error. Sabine Pass is the outlet of the Sabine River into the Gulf of Mexico, and is not to be assumed as a pathway through hills or mountains. Sabine Pass is also the name of a formerly incorporated town on the banks of the Sabine River where it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The railroad in quest ran from a terminus at Sabine Pass, Texas, northward to Port Arthur, Texas. It continued north passing near the site of the Lucas Gusher at Peveto, Texas, then into Beaumont. There was a gap in the line between Beaumont and Lumberton, Texas. But trackage rights over the Gulf Coast & Santa Fe RR between Beaumont and Loeb Jct. allowed the trains to reach Kountze, Texas. This entire line became part of the Texas & New Orleans RR which was, itself, a part of the Southern Pacific system. -Jason Lockhart, Sr.-)

My first read of the original text is that Kountze's desire was expressed but tracks were not necessarily built and that the land was sold on speculation. Whatever the original meaning, T&NO's line merits a mention for context, just not in the manner that was there when I came to the page. Slambo (Speak) 15:18, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
