Taxonomy and phylogeny

The second sentence is incorrect. There are at least 81 genera in 4 subfamilies in the family Halictidae according to ITIS.[1] "The Halictidae family contains four genera, Halictus, Lasioglossum, Augochlorella, and Augochlora.", is a misinterpretation of the original source.[2] The source file actually says that "The bee family Halictidae includes over 4000 described species of bees. ... Within the halictid bees there are approximately 1000 eusocial species in four genera: Halictus, Lasioglossum, Augochlora, and Augochlorella." In other words, the four genera listed are a subgroup of eusocial sweat bees within the family Halictidae. Johnvalo (talk) 09:41, 25 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I corrected a few grammatical mistakes, confusing phrasing, redundant sentences, and spelling errors. The article could have used a proofreader as there were some simple spelling mistakes throughout the article. Good information is provided in this article, but a few of the sections could have used expansion, such as the Taxonomy and phylogeny and Cell recognition section. In the Distribution and habitat section, I'm confused by the "It's season is February through November, with longer seasons in the more southern states" section. The reader may be unsure what that season is (foraging? mating?). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flynnt2013 (talkcontribs) 00:53, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

This was an informative, pretty well written article. I had to make some minor grammatical and sentence structure flaws, but I thought that it flowed smoothly for the most part. The taxonomy and phylogeny section needs fleshing out a bit, does A. pura have any close relatives? Under distribution and habitat, you mention a season for the bee, but it is unclear what season it is that you are referring to. What is the difference in behavior for the bee between flight season and nests being active? The lifespan is given for males in a laboratory, but it would be informative to give the lifespan for both males and females in nature if available. I organized all the behavior subsections under one large behavior section, but would consider moving the economy of labor section under the nest construction section. Additionally, I italicized the species name in multiple places throughout the article. After mentioning the species name once, it is not necessary to spell out the whole name every time, so I also shortened Augochlora pura to A. pura in multiple places. This article was thorough in the information that was given. I would suggest including a range map to better visualize the areas in which the bees inhabit. There are a lot of small subsections under behavior that I would also suggest adding more information to them or including them in other sections, such as with cell recognition and economy of labor. The first sentence in the Description section was a large run-on sentence, so I corrected it. I went through and added commas and hyperlinks (nematodes, Fusarium, ovarian diapause, etc.). Is there a specific species of the Fusarium fungus that was found on the bees? This would be good to add. I would like to know more about the cell recognition and daily rhythms. How can they "feel the integrity of walls," and how are these rhythms generated? Is there an internal mechanism? I liked the synonyms section, and for the most part, I thought that the sections were well fleshed out. Finally, you may want to describe what Darfour's gland is. Good start to this article. Some suggestions I have might be to improve the introductory blurb, and make it a little longer. I have already removed the citations in this section – according to the wikipedia style guide, they are unnecessary as long as the information appears elsewhere (cited) on the page.

Other suggestions include a tightening up of the section on mating behavior. You cite two time frames for length of copulation (once you say it lasts between 3 seconds and 2 minutes, another time you say the length is about 25 seconds on average). It might benefit the section if you decide which of these is a more reliable figure based on your citations.

Finally, your last section (interspecies interaction) might benefit from being broken up into sections on association with other bees, and on parasitism.

Overall, great start!!
