Talk:Atlas (architecture)

Atlantes are plural, the singular being atlas, in English. An imagined "Atlant", recently suggested, is not English (see OED).--Wetman (talk) 18:37, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

With all due respect, the OED is not the be all and end all. See here. And of course, there are plenty of Latin and other language terms that are included in Wikipedia.--Filll (talk | wpc) 19:06, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just removed the word edit

"church" from the caption of the first image. I found my self wondering just what sort of church this might be on, so tracked the picture back to the German wikipedia where more of the building is revealed and (tho my German vacillates between Very weak and nonexistent, I still don't think this is on a church. But make me humble, prove me wrong. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:10, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Good call! Your "Very weak" German doesn't deceive you--the atlantes in question are on the Hans Albers house at Lange Reihe 71 in the district (NOT church) of St. Georg in Hamburg. Somebody must have been led astray by the "St." in the caption. Sorry that it took over two years for somebody to confirm this for you! 206.208.105.129 (talk) 12:23, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

New World examples edit

Would it be appropriate to add examples from the various Precolumbian cultures of Mexico and Central America? Though most still-standing examples are missing the roofs they once supported, they are commonly referred to as Atlantids or Atlantean columns in academic literature. An example on WP can be found at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f3/TulaSite81.JPG Trilobright (talk) 16:22, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
