Tables edit

What do these tables mean? Is anyone working on these? Or do we just not have any information from the past 100 years :oP tiZom(the man) 00:54, 29 January 2006 (UTC) Where is Mark Spitz? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.110.153.218 (talk) 01:17, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

triathlon? edit

There's no note at Triathlon at the Summer Olympics about this past event, nor at Triathlon or Triathlon (disambiguation), there's no article for athletic triathlon... so what is it? 70.51.11.210 (talk) 12:41, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

What it is completely weird! It was held only once, at the 1904 Games. Athletics at the 1904 Summer Olympics - Men's triathlon has more information on it. I've added a bit more to this article. But generally, it was a trio of athletics events contested by gymnasts that appears to have contributed to the gymnastics all-around scores. Information on the 1904 Games is a bit sparse, but that appears to be what happened. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 19:29, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
If it counted towards gymnastics scores and were competed by gymnasts, shouldn't it be in the Olympic gymnastics set of articles? 70.51.11.210 (talk) 05:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
One would think. However, the IOC does list the medals won in that event as part of the Athletics discipline. See here for instance. To make things worse, there was also an event in Gymnastics that year called the triathlon -- Gymnastics at the 1904 Summer Olympics - Men's triathlon. Things only really started (and I do mean started) to make any sense with the 1906 Games. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 05:44, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Interesting... though [1], [2], [3], doesn't show a "triathlon" for gymnastics, just a "combined 3-event"; there's also a "combined 4-event" [4], which matches the "Combined" event article we have on WP. Gymnastic quadrathlon? 70.51.11.210 (talk) 06:14, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I like the "quadrathlon" idea! The naming on these events is unfortunately not consistent from source to source. See Sports-Reference.com's list of gymnastics events for 1904, for example. Note also that they include the athletics competition under gymnastics. Ah well. At least in 1904 we have a pretty good idea of which events are Olympic events; 1900 was terrible about that. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 06:25, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Curiously, that reference lists "apparatus all around" and "4 event all around", except both have 4 apparatuses... the only three event is the "field work"... While the [5] (St. Louis Olympics, 1904, Mo: 1904, MO ; By Sandy Marshall, George Matthews ; Published by Arcadia Publishing, 2003 ; ISBN 0738523291, 9780738523293) book lists only events in July. 70.51.11.210 (talk) 07:03, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah; in fact, both have the exact same apparatuses. The vault and pommel horse were combined for the "3-event" competition, but separate for the "4-event" competition. In the 3-event, the two were combined for a total of 1/3 of the score (and 3 of the total 9 routines). In the 4-event, each individually contributed 1/4 of the score (and each was 3 of the total 12 routines). The components of the 4-event were also the separate "apparatus finals", to use the modern terminology. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 07:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

USSR v Russia edit

Since Russia was officially reckognized by UN as the successor-state of USSR, it's just not correct to separate soviet medals from russian ones. It applies to all sports at the olympics. 94.180.30.122 (talk) 11:14, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The tables here reflect how the International Olympic Committee assigns the medals. It's probably best to take it up with them instead. SFB 19:35, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I totally agree. The Olympics are not organized by the UN. It is organized by the IOC. -- ThiagoSimoes (talk) 12:20, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Medal table edit

The medal table is wrong, after many people changed it after the 2016 Olympics before informing what medals they added. This needs to be rebuilt from scratch or sourced from somewhere else. -- 200.135.161.1 (talk) 01:15, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

The medal table was an unsourced mess. I found a source for medals up to 2012, added the medals earned at the 2016 Olympics and reallocated the medals changed by doping offenses. -- ThiagoSimoes (talk) 12:17, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. There is something very wrong with those figures. I can't work them out at all. I've added a template to help readers treat the figures with doubt. I've been sort-of of looking for a project to do in Wikipedia. Maybe I'll get stuck in with fixing this medal table. It's just data surely? Er... Seaweed (talk) 13:30, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ah, wait! There is All-time Olympic Games medal table to consider.Seaweed (talk) 20:43, 11 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Seaweed and ThiagoSimoes: Should be relatively straight forward to source the Olympic athletics medal totals via sports reference. You'll just need to deduct the athletics medals from the 1906 Intercalated Games, which those statisticians currently include in the Olympics tallies (that's if we want to follow IOC approach and not a broader approach here). @Seaweed, ThiagoSimoes, and Sillyfolkboy: Any specific mistakes? Is somebody working on in? --Pelmeen10 (talk) 08:29, 12 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
