• LOFAR: "LOFAR will be the largest radio telescope ever built".

ALMA Emblem - usage restrictions

In searching for any restrictions on the use of some of the many images available at the ALMA website, I came across this page, http://www.almaobservatory.org/en/visuals/usage-of-alma-visuals, which contains fairly clear guidance of the use of their "visuals".

While they encourage general use of most images, the fifth condition clearly states :

"- This general permission does not extend to use of the ALMA’s Emblem, which shall remain protected and may not be used or reproduced without prior and individual written consent of ALMA. Owners of external websites wishing to link to the ALMA web site may use ALMA’s Emblem for the link, provided they have obtained prior authorisation from the ALMA Public Relations Department and on the condition that such use is clearly identifiable as a web link;"

Looking at the Wikimedia Commons page for this image, I can find no reference to explicit permission being obtained. Perhaps this is because the image was downloaded from the ESO website and not from ALMA itself, but nonetheless I imagine that the same restrictions apply.

Should the emblem/logo be removed?

Removed some unnecessary information

Not sure why anyone would mention Kazakh word "alma" which means "apple" when this project has nothing to do with Kazakhstan. "Alma" also means "apple" in most other Turkic languages as well as Hungarian. In any case, I removed this bit of information from the main article. What's the connection between the Spanish word ALMA and the project A.L.M.A?

Why refer to Spanish word ALMA? Abbreviation A.L.M.A (Atacama Large Millimeter Arra) has nothing to do with the Spanish word. Please correct me if I missed something?

Answer: Because astronomers tend to be clever with acronyms on purpose (see e.g., here or here). Therefore, it is highly likely that, the array being in a Spanish speaking country, they tried to match the acronym to a Spanish word.

Similar Telescope Array?

I remember a couple years ago reading an article on popsci.com about a propsed telescope array project that would produce as much data (in a day) as the total internet does in a day. Seeing this array reminded me of that. Could anyone help me find the name of the huge array I'm thinking of? Mchcopl (talk) 22:36, 25 April 2013 (UTC)!

Out of Date

As per user above, it's well past several of the dates mentioned in-text, and there are numerous incosistencies regarding not just what was planned (and I have no idea how much was implemented), but also inconsistencies in tense throughout the entire article. "Although it is designed to have a resolution 10 times greater than that of Hubble, it will be superseded in 2024 by the Square Kilometre Array in South Africa and Australia, that will have 50 times the resolution of ALMA.[13]" Does this sentence belong here?
