Why is this under the scientific name? edit

Generally Wikipedia uses the common name of living things if one exists; surely "yardlong bean" is common and unambiguous, and a lot more recognizable to the average reader than Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis. Are there other beans commonly known as "yardlong beans"? Vultur (talk) 10:51, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalisYardlong bean – Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:FLORA. As this plant is extensively consumed as a vegetable, the large majority of reliable sources covering it are non-scientific sources using the generic name. Paul_012 (talk) 19:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have no problem with Asparagus bean as the target. Would you support a move to that name? (Your "oppose" suggests a preference for retaining the scientific name as the title.) --Paul_012 (talk) 08:36, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Subspecies edit

Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis is in fact the 'sesquipedalis' group of the Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata (See this). And asparagus beans are just a cultivar in that group. Other cultivars include something like File:Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis.jpg which is long ('sesquipedalis'), but looks and tastes quite different from asparagus beans. --Gomuragi (talk) 05:43, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
