Innovators for the Public

This article appears to incorporate the organization's tag line into it's name. According to the Form990 the organization files with the US Government, the orgs name is simply "Ashoka" (I found a copy of the 990 for 2003/4 on Guidestar - requires free registration) The appearance (and the sound) of the Innovators of the Public bit appear to be tag line-ish. Is it really the org's name?

Nb: The legal name of Ashoka in the U.S. is Ashoka:Innovators for the Public. It is not the organization's tag line. Similarly, for legal reasons, in India and India only, the name is organization's name is Ashoka Foundation.

Jim M: The Moderator states that the article needs to be rewritten to make it read less as an advertisement. I respectfully disagree with this assessment. The article is factual, straight forward description of what Ashoka is and does. I find no solicitation of business (which is what ads do). I just finished reading the Max Plunck Institute pages, which are in the same vein. If the article were changed, I would like to read some typical CASE STUDIES of organizations which have benefited from the grants and support by Ashoka. I also disagree that the current version is written like an ad. After reading the whole article I find that it describes what the organization does in an objective way. Perhaps the assessment that it's written like an ad was based on the previous discussion regarding the tagline? I would like to suggest that we remove the advert tag. Uninformative article

I hate Wikipedia articles like this. It reads as though it was written by a PR officer for the organization. Worse, it is filled with sentences like : "Changemakers sponsors collaborative competitions intended to develop innovative solutions to social problems." What does that mean? What kind of problems? A number of websites claim that this organization coined the term "changemaker" which entered into the public lexicon when Bill Clinton used it during a major speech. Proposed Edits to Current page in line with Updated Information from Ashoka.org and Guidestar

Hi all – I'm requesting we make the following changes that reflect some updated information based on information from Ashoka.org and Guidestar. To be transparent, I am employed by Ashoka, and so cannot make these changes myself due to COI.

The changes below I see personally as informational shifts based on primary / secondary source data (one person has left the organization that's on the wikipedia page; one person has shifted roles; the organizational name indicated in "Innovators for the Public" now has an update – from both Ashoka.org and Guidestar; and updating the language on Ashoka's mission).

Edit 1: Personnel Primary source – Ashoka.org Leadership page (last updated June 2022) – https://www.ashoka.org/en-us/our-leadership.

- Kevin Yea is no longer with the organization as of April 30, 2022, and so needs to be taken off as the CFO on the page.

- Diana Wells is no longer the President but still works at Ashoka; she has a different title and so this needs to be updated from "President" to President Emerita; Leadership and Impact Co-Lead.

- If applicable or accepted, the current leadership team, executive team, and board of directors indicated on the Our Leadership page (link above) can be added to the page; it is current as of June 2022 (can share the edit log if need be here).

Edit 2: Legal Name Primary source – Ashoka.org Form 990 for FY 21 (aka has been the case for the last year) which can be found on this page https://www.ashoka.org/en-us/annual-reports and at this direct link https://www.ashoka.org/sites/default/files/2022-07/2020%20Ashoka%20Form%20990%2C%20990-T%20-%20Public%20Disclosure%20Copy.pdf.

- As seen on the Form 990, the legal name is no longer Ashoka: Innovators for the Public for the USA (or anywhere, for that matter). It is now simply Ashoka. So all legal organizational mentions on this page should be "Ashoka" and not entail Innovators for the Public. For considerations about the branded name, consult Edit 3 below.

Edit 3: Tagline (aka 'branded name') Primary source – Ashoka.org Title page for the Home page (http://www.ashoka.org/en-us) says "Ashoka | Everyone a Changemaker"; secondary source – Guidestar profile (https://www.guidestar.org/profile/51-0255908)

- Ashoka's tagline says "Everyone a Changemaker" on each of these sources. Ashoka has been branded "Ashoka: Everyone a Changemaker" for the last number of years. And so I'm proposing an edit from "branded, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public" to "branded, Ashoka: Everyone a Changemaker, formerly known as Ashoka: Innovators for the Public)

Note about Edit 3: There will be more about this specific piece in the coming weeks that confirm this further (an updated Brand booklet for 2022), so if the above sources are not enough for a change that is ok and we can revisit.

Edit 4: Ashoka's mission discrepancy On the Wikipedia page, the stated mission / purpose does not seem to be the same as what is on the Form 990, page 2, Part III, #1 https://www.ashoka.org/sites/default/files/2022-07/2020%20Ashoka%20Form%20990%2C%20990-T%20-%20Public%20Disclosure%20Copy.pdf (which is the legal definition of the mission) and on Ashoka.org's "About Ashoka" page under Mission under 'Mission' https://www.ashoka.org/en-us/about-ashoka#our-mission (which is the marketing expression of the Mission). Is it possible to shift these to be closer to the actual stated mission on the Form 990 / Ashoka.org pages?

It certainly does seem like they have been done @Quackslikeaduck! Thanks for the follow through and confirmation there; I think once the new brand book comes out that can be added; but for now these changes are resolved, and when the other changes happen we can revert. Looking at the article history, substantial portions of the article seem to have been written by SPAs using primary sources and seem to have close association with the founders. Molochmeditates (talk) 20:04, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
