Japanese names inconsistent edit

Japanese names on wikipedia are inconsistent in English. Historical figures like Takauji are named with last name first, while current people like Shinzo Abe and Namie Amuro are named with first name first. 96.248.228.69 (talk) 08:29, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

The determining factor is what the common name in English-speaking media is, per WP:COMMONNAME. For historical figures, particularly pre-Meiji, it's almost always surname-first, following Japanese convention.
