Disambiguation

This needs to be a disambiguation page. -- Zoe

Good pick-up, Zoe. But in this case we should clearly go with the primary meaning rule: words that descend from other words (i.e., that are named after them) go to a subsiduary title.
For example, the bomber aircraft called "Canberra" was named after the city, so the city entry is Canberra, while the aircraft becomes English Electric Canberra.
In this case, the primary meaning is the Ashanti people of Africa (at a wild guess there would be 20 or 40 million of them). A band that chooses to name itself after the people thus becomes Ashanti (singer) or something similar. It is offensive to take the position that 4 musicians (or 14 - whatever number) are more important than an entire nation with a proud history. Tannin 02:06 Apr 25, 2003 (UTC)

Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:01, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Vocal Profile

which song Ashanti hits G6?? Some singers have just their notes but I wanna know in what music they hit them... There's just the notes and octaves of some singers in their respective pages, but I would like to know in what songs they hit their highest and lowest notes...
---
I don't know if it's just me, but I found this section confusing. "Unlike many other singers with the ability, Ashanti, while possessing a clear, girly, coloratura soprano voice, has built a career singing in the lower and middle ranges of her voice." Sure, I'll buy that. But: "...as of late, Ashanti has used her head register so infrequently, many who ...would mistakenly classify her as a classic example of a soubrette." Reading soubrette says "In popular music...The term refers to a woman with a light, youthful voice."
Is it just me, or can a person not "build a career singing in the lower and middle ranges" and be mistaken for a soubrette, who would be a higher-ranged singer? It seems to be contradictory.
I don't know enough about vocals to correct it or even be sure it needs correcting. Even if this is right, I think it needs more clarifying. ~Garnet Avi

For clarification, a coloratura soprano is a soprano with an extensive range and ornate singing style, meaning a singer who can sing a many different notes and even at times access the whistle register. A soubrette has a limited voice and can't reach higher notes. Mariah Carey is an example of a dramatic coloratura soprano and Kiely Williams of 3LW would be the best example of a soubrette I can think of.PhoenixPrince 16:31, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I have a question also...what does her "slender appearance" have to do with her vocal abilities? Lesanichelle 06:15, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Ashanti hit G6 when she was performing the National Anthem in high school. Go on www.youtube.com and type in Ashanti(National Anthem). There will be a video featuring clips of Ashanti performing the National Anthem. The G6 can be heard, but you have to listen carefully because people are cheering while she is doing it. It is near the end.
If you're talking about when she sing "Free" then its not the whistle register. But she does hit Eb6 which is the first whistle note flat. The notes for free are: Bb5,C6,D6,Eb6,C6,D6,Bb5. I think this is enough to consider her a Coloratura. Shre really impressed me. I used to think she was a soubrette because she uses so little of her range, but she is obviously a coloratura soprano and should be able to sing in the whistle register but Eb6 is her highest recorded. If the G#6 is during brave then its not loud enough to varify. Myke 07:09, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

if Ashanti is soprano than so is Aaliyah no way Aaliyah's an alot when she sings soprano so well and can access her full range way better than Ashnati can acess hers

"50 Cent would later mock Ja Rule as being soft and "not a true gangsta", citing the "Mesmerize" video and its pop-culture appeal as an example."
- This is what drives me mad about hip hop culture; 50 Cent calls Ja Rule "not a true gangsta" as a CRITICISM?! That's a compliment!! 50 Cent (and all other human beings on this planet who believe that respect is only entitled to those who carry out horrific atrocities and are arrogant fools) is one twisted indvidual.

Page/Single Stat Problems

  • Hey, I was just trying to fix the page today and I wasn't logged in and 2 people (clean up people I guess) thought I was messing the page up. I have the CORRECT stats on all ashanti's singles and I was just trying to fix them. I corrected her album sales and her grammy history box but whoever messed the page up made the grammy history box merge with the rest of the stuff @ the bottom and I don't know how to fix that.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/retrieve_chart_history.do?model.vnuArtistId=447037&model.vnuAlbumId=655624 <<one of the sites

Ok I just found the Good site: http://www.mariah-charts.com/chartdata/PAshanti.htm < All the singles stats are there. And they are correct. I've fixed the page to how it was before it was messed up ( I actually read the tutorials lol). It still needs a cleanup but at least the info is right now. I also saved the data on this page.

Producer?

Hello, I was working on redirecting the links pointing to the disambiguation page for producer - I wasn't able to decide/discover which sense of the word was intended in the introductory sentence of this article. I'd appreciate a little guidance. I'll watch this page for a while in case anyone can help. Thanks. - Politepunk 20:19, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

When referring to music, it should be linked to record producer. --Musicpvm 18:50, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm removing worldwide sales from the article

Until somebody can provide a link to a source, they should be removed. 90% of the edits to this article have been users modifying her sales back and forth. --Musicpvm 07:06, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Dear Musicpvm,(6/12/06)

I have the source for the WW album sales that I put up but I need just a few days to put them up. They'll be up in just a few days.

Ok, I removed them for now because other users will continue to change them. After you have a link to the source, you can put them back. --Musicpvm 01:21, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

vocals

Ashanti can be classified as whistle register singer because on her true first albulm Can't stop before she met Gotti she was hitting real high notes one especially being held long on More Than A melody. I wonder why she been down playing herself cuz on that albulm she showed she could sang.

Removal of voice section

There is ZERO pov about the section. No specific notes are named. Everything stated can be backed up to defs per other Wikipedia articles or published media. She has been derided for a lack of range. Early promo material has called her a soprano, despite a lack of singing to demonstrate. I put it back, if you don't like it, holler at me. Antares33712 22:30, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Ashanti

OK first of all Ashanti is a HIP HOP singer not pop there is a big line between hip hop and pop. Pop is more along the lines of Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson. Ashanti, Beyonce and Alicia Keys sing Hip Hop and R&B so please correct that thank you

Ashanti is NOT hip hop; she is R&B. --musicpvm 04:30, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Pop stands for popular and last time I checked, all of those artists are popular.

that doesn't have anything to do with it she herself always describes herself as hip-hop and r&b just like mary. pop songs are just for sales and have no real meaning she doesn t make that

Ancestry

Since someone tagged this a long time ago and it is still uncited to a reputable source (no, not the IMDB or other trivia sites, so don't get your hopes up), here it is pending a source: "Ashanti's father is of African American and Chinese American descent and her mother is 1/4 African American and 3/4 Dominican." Mad Jack 05:48, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

on her imdb profile it says that her father is african american and chinese. but i dont know where someone got dominican from.

Genre

Ashanti Is a R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop Artist. It's very clear that she is a hip hop artist from her first cd and even on her third cd's intro she says "Concrete Rose because when you think of Hip-Hop, you think of something grimy and gritty, Concrete, But when you think of R&B, You think Of Something soft and sensual, sorta like a rose. My Music is consider Hip Hop and R&B, hence, Concrete Rose"

Also I found a VH1 interview:[1]

VH1: Why did you decide to call your new album Concrete Rose?

Ashanti: We chose the title because when you think of hip-hop you think of something grimy, raw, or from the gutter - something concrete. When you think of R&B, you think of something soft and smooth and sensual like a rose. So with my music being hip hop and R&B, hence, Concrete Rose.

vocal range- can u say that ashanti can hit whistle register listen to the note she hits in the begining of this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPMHYKKCStU -User:It'sOnlyU

someone needs to put hip hop back

WHO KEEPS ADDING POP BACK SHE DESCRIBES ALL HER MUSIC TO BE HIP HOP AND RANDB. IF U MUST PUT POP U HAVE TO PROVIDE REFERENCE —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Danotorious1jd (talkcontribs).

Please sign your comments on talk pages and do not type in all capital letters. Ashanti is not a hip hop musician. Read the hip hop music article if you are unaware of what the genre encompasses. Almost every current R&B artist uses hip hop beats and collaborates with rappers these days. That does NOT make them hip hop musicians. Ashanti is not an exception to this. She is NOT a rapper, and she is NOT a DJ. Also, Ashanti is definitely pop as well as R&B. She would not have had so many hit singles at mainstream radio if her music was pure R&B. --musicpvm 22:47, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

YEs she is hip hop because she does rap. in the songs wonderful remix, a song that's unfamilar on jarule's pain is love abulm, the still on it remix, and i'm in love again remix. listen to all these songs and she is obviously rapping. She is purely r&b with a pop appeal because pop songs have simple meanings whereas just like r&b she mostly talks about love, life, and love making. if ashanti can be classified as pop so should Beyonce no bias Danotorious1jd 02:54, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Beyonce IS classified as pop. --musicpvm 03:08, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

POP=POPULAR MUSIC. Ashanti is a pop artist also. Many Rnb artist have done pop songs including mariah and whitney. Rock Wit U/Happy were def. pop or had pop appeal. -User:It'sOnlyU

ashanti is not a pop singer, her music does not even play on those types of music stations. they play on hip-hop/r&b stations.

I belive she is pop also, the pussycat dolls have busta rhymes in there song that does not make then hip-hop

Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas (born October 13, 1980), professionally known as Ashanti, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, poet, actress, and fashion designer who rose to fame in the early 2000s. [Please don't say Nasty things about Ashanti she straight damnment! Not gay assholes!. yall need to grow up and stop talking shit! about her] Hey, I saw that. I tried to delete it, but It wouldn't budge. In Edit Page, it wasn't even there, so I kind of got a little scared. :P

Even though this is kinda off topic can someone help the new list of best-selling remix albums worldwide with its structure.

Merging Ashanti discography with Ashanti

  • Strong Agree - I beleive that Ashanti discography should be merged with Ashanti because I do not see the point of having the discography separate to the actual artist. Jhfireboy I'm listening 22:30, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment - Many, many artists now have a main page and a separate discography, especially those with an extensive history. Ashanti doesn't have a long career so far per se, but I don't see a problem with having two articles. The only problem I have is the huge size of the album cover images. - eo 22:40, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Mel Etitis: Aretha Franklin Lady Of Soul award controversy, philantrophy, screenshots & discography

Everything I put on that page is SOURCED. It's funny u keep reverting the article back saying the article is poorly written when I created the revised article u keep changing the current revision back to. You can even check the ashanti dicussion page where I stated that months ago. And if poor writing was the case, u are a wikipedian and you should have tidied the article up yourself where you see fit since you are the only one who seems to think the article needs copy editing. I always posts reliable sources to everything I add and I even included youtube links for a select few sections. The Lady Of Soul Awards controversy needed to be added so I added it. It was a big point in her career. I added her philanthropy which is all sourced. ALL the screenshots have the proper fair use rational in there page descriptions. As for her discography, Every sales figure is SOURCED. All u have to do is click on the link and type in the singers name. The information u keep adding is WRONG and NOTHING is sourced. Nothing is bias or from my POV. Everything is either compiled from album reviews or exclusive interviews with the artist herself.

Sales figures

Over the last month, various IPs have been changing the following text:

"As of 2008, she has sold more than fifteen million records worldwide, with more than seven million of these sold in the US."

to

"As of 2008, she has sold more than 27 million records worldwide, with more than 15 million of these sold in the US."

and

"The album went Platinum in the United States."

to

"The album went double Platinum in the United States."

The sources in this article don't appear to support these changes, and no explanations or other sources have been provided. If no sources can be provided, can an explanation for the changes for given instead? Thanks. Acalamari 16:58, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Perhaps one of those disambiguation boxes in the introduction ("This page is about the entertainer. For other uses see.." would be appropriate. Specifically I'm thinking of the Ghanaian ethnic group, which I meant to Google when I found this. If a singer called themself "Belgium", I wouldn't expect Wikipedia to stop routing searches for "Belgium" to the country Belgium. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.24.170 (talk) 08:26, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Requested move 21:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: move to Ashanti (singer). It doesn't seem sufficiently demonstrated that Ashanti is commonly known with her last name. However, the disambiguator seems more appropriate at "singer" rather than "entertainer", given she is primarily known for her singing career and in light of the "entertainer" disambiguator being phased out except in situations where no better alternative exists. -- tariqabjotu 17:19, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Ashanti (entertainer)Ashanti Douglas – Similar artists such as Brandy or Beyoncé who are also known by mononyms are known by their full name e.g. Brandy Norwood or Beyoncé Knowles, rather than disambiguated by (entertainer). --Relisted. -- tariqabjotu 05:31, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Lil_niquℇ 1 [talk] 21:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

As above "singer Ashanti" 188 GBhits is more than "entertainer Ashanti" zero GBhits, yes? So why should we select a dab that is that is not her common description per WP:DISAMBIGUATION. The whole point of disambiguation is to help people find what they're looking for (singer) is more concise, more common in print sources, and less ambiguous. And also to steer people away. If I saw Ashanti (entertainer) I would click expecting to find an entertainer not a singer. This is why we have (singer) as the normal dab for singers on en.wp. In ictu oculi (talk) 03:40, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
In ictu - I'm sorry, but your idiosyncratic interpretation of "entertainer" is just not supported by sources. Thousands of reliable sources, from newspapers and magazines, to books and reference works, to peer-reviewed scholarly journals, use "entertainer" to describe singers, actors, dancers and the like, Ashanti included. Your specific search has no results, but remove the quotes and see what you find (made somewhat tricky by results referring to entertainers of the Ashanti people):
  • Historical Dictionary of African-American Television, p.26: "Among the entertainers appearing in the TV special were ... Ashanti."
  • The Economic Naturalist's Field Guide, ch.1: "To celebrate Amber Ridinger's thirteenth birthday, for example, her parents bought her a $27,000 Dolce & Gabbana gown and hired JaRule, Ashanti, and other popular entertainers to provide live music..."
  • Ebony, Apr. 2005, letter to editor:"[Ashanti] has proven to be a top-notch entertainer who has made her mark in the music and movie arenas."
You're correct that people clicking here should expect to find an entertainer - and they do. Ashanti is an entertainer. "(singer)" is too precise, and inaccurate for someone who is also known as an actress, songwriter, etc. Dohn joe (talk) 16:44, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Dohn Joe. How do any of the comments relate to the question you were asked.
As above "singer Ashanti" 188 GBhits is more than "entertainer Ashanti" zero GBhits, yes or no?
This is a simple issue of overwhelming numerical common description [an open search as you have done "Singer" + "Ashanti" would produce "about 9,230 results". Why go against printed sources? In ictu oculi (talk) 00:04, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
I thought that I acknowledged that your specific search string returned no results, which is why I added my search - to show that Ashanti is called an "entertainer" in reliable sources more than zero times. Quite a few, in fact. The unanalyzed search for "entertainer" + "ashanti" returns 1,820 results. Not as many as for "singer", true, but certainly a respectable result. Same goes for "actress" + "ashanti" - 3,200 raw results. And the more recent you look, the less often she is called a "singer", relatively speaking. Since 2010, Google Books shows 1,460 results for "singer", 820 results for "actress", and 688 results for "entertainer". As her career has broadened, so have the ways people refer to her. Dohn joe (talk) 07:16, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
Dohn joe. The first page of your 688 hits contains mainly uses related to the African tribe, Ashanti spider etc. Ashanti the Hindi movie, and not 1 use related to this article here. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:43, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
Um, the very first result is about this Ashanti, actually.... Dohn joe (talk) 02:04, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
And the reference you've provided is an umbrella grouping of "entertainers" - not a reason to have Denzel Washington (entertainer) or Bradford Marsalis (entertainer). In ictu oculi (talk) 00:15, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Kathleen Fearn-Banks The A to Z of African-American Television 2009 Page 26 "Among the entertainers appearing in the TV special were Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Savion Glover, Denzel Washington, Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Vivica A. Fox, Ashanti, and others.

Well, so do you agree that the above-named folks are indeed "entertainers", per the source? Dohn joe (talk) 07:16, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
In ictu - an answer, please? Dohn joe (talk) 02:04, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
It's not that these people aren't entertainers—it's that the phrase is too broad, and consequently is fairly vague. We could move hundreds of articles on athletes to Foo Barson (sportsman) or Foo Barson (athlete), but that doesn't mean we should. --BDD (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
But we do use "(athlete)" in the analogous situation in sports, when someone is notable in more than one sport, such as baseball and American football: Pat White (athlete), for example. Same here: when someone is notable in more than one area of entertainment, "(entertainer)" is an appropriate disambiguator. Dohn joe (talk) 00:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Ashanti isn't Aaliyah, who had a lead role in Queen of the Damned. If Ashanti weren't a singer, would she still have an article about her as an actress? Maybe, but it would be a stub. If she hadn't done any acting, though, would she still have an article as a singer? Absolutely, and it wouldn't look much different than what we have now. --BDD (talk) 21:18, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Seems to me like Ashanti has a respectable filmography, including a lead role the tv drama Army Wives. Three full paragraphs in the current article are about her acting - that's more than most stubs on WP. Dohn joe (talk) 18:35, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:DISAMBIGUATION the Ashanti page has the option of being named without disambiguation by being located at Ashanti Douglas - the name she is professionally credited to as a songwriter. This is more WP:PRECISE IMO. — Lil_niquℇ 1 [talk] 19:02, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Looking at IMDb, she has always been credited as "Ashanti" as acting, whereas Beyonce, for example, has always been "Beyonce Knowles" as an actress. I'd support a move to Ashanti (singer), though. — Status (talk · contribs) 03:51, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Support. Natural disambiguation is better than making up our own disambiguator. We can't just call her "Ashanti", no sources call her "Ashanti (entertainer)", multiple sources use her real name "Ashanti Douglas", so the latter is best. bobrayner (talk) 19:21, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:
  • How about Ashanti (singer), per IIO? Combined with Article editor's comment, this could be the choice of consensus. --BDD (talk) 17:28, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
As the original nominator for the page move I am in two minds about using "Singer" as the disambiguater. My main concern is that she is not just a singer however, if others agree I would support it in that the current disambiguator "entertainer" is somewhat ambiguous and being phased out. — Lil_niquℇ 1 [talk] 13:50, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Record producer?

I see a lot of references online to her being a record producer but she does not have any credits as "record producer." There is a difference between being a recording artist and a recording producer. I'm leaving it as-is but this is an area where it would be good a cited credit added as a producer (not just someone referring to her a record producer).
