Talk:Asín

Latest comment: 15 years ago by Dbachmann
I found a site earlier that listed "asin/osin" or "asin/osun" as the Basque word for "nettle". More often in google search I find the form "asun". There are other Basque variants [1]:
"Proto-Basque: *ɦaśuin
Meaning: nettle
Bizkaian: asun
Gipuzkoan: asun, osin
High Navarrese: asuiñ, asuñ, osin
Low Navarrese: hausin
Lapurdian: hausin, hasuin, asuiñ
Zuberoan: ásün
Comments: Compared by H. Berger (1959) with Burushaski *ɣaśú 'nettle, onion'. Cf. the alternative comparisons (separate for 'nettle' and 'onion') by S.A. Starostin on http://starling.rinet.ru/."
I want to find out whether Asín derives from that Basque root. I won't be able to find Diccionario Onomástico Y Heráldico Vasco in Los Angeles, maybe on ebay :) A is putting the smack down (talk) 15:54, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

comparing this toponym with the Basque word will be original research, unless we can point to a source that is making it. --dab (𒁳) 16:08, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I'll be looking for a source, if there is a work that has that info. A is putting the smack down (talk) 16:25, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

there is another Asín in Broto, also in Aragon, whence according to redaragon.com the surname derives. Apart from that, I cannot find the toponym anywhere else. --dab (𒁳) 16:27, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
