Name Change
Honestly I think the article should be titled "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" because I'd imagine most people refer to him with that name.
- AFAIK, under English law at the time, one's name was the name one habitually used. If he used "Conan Doyle" as his surname and was known under that surname, then that was his surname. One's registered name at birth is of marginal relevance. In Conan Doyle's case, his family and descendants used the surname "Conan Doyle". I'm not a lawyer and am not certain enough of the relevant law to change the article, but if I'm right, the "Name" section should be changed and the repeated references to "Doyle" should be changed also. - I don't believe we ever include the word "Sir" in titles of biographical articles. Regarding "Doyle" vs. "Conan Doyle," this is a perennial discussion point in Sherlockian/Doylean circles (for example, whenever we're preparing a bibliography or an index), but it is best to use "Doyle" as the surname, as discussed in the article itself, here. - He had two wives, and both are buried as Conan Doyle, which is to say, that is what their headstones read. Regardless of his name at birth, or how or when the changed that, his surname in life was Conan Doyle. Not done: Apparently, in contrast to direct or lineal descendants, there are collateral descendants, e.g. niece/nephews, which Doyle does have per cited source. Not sure if it's necessary to make this distinction as our article doesn't seem to discuss his collateral descendants, but not a pleonasm Cannolis (talk) 14:48, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Apparently he also played in goal for AC Portchester when the club was first formed - perhaps someone could substantiate and expand on this and add to the sporting section of the overall article 2A02:C7C:D781:3900:CCF6:4AF1:9696:B6A3 (talk) 17:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
- The first sentence of the "Sporting career" section is "While living in Southsea, the seaside resort of Portsmouth, Doyle played football as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth Association Football Club, an amateur side, under the pseudonym A.
