He invented the idea and partial theoretical basis for the single beam trap configuration know as optical tweezers in 78, it just took till 86 before he built them. Should it say that he invented them in 78 and produced an apparatus in 86? --Andorphin 08:33, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

World War II service

Although Ashkin served in the United States Army during World War II, no reliable sources found as of yet state that he served overseas in a war zone during the war. More specifically, the sources do not establish defining role in World War II. Accordingly, "Category:American military personnel of World War II" was removed from the article. Semper Fi!
