Talk:Around the world cycling record

Merger proposal edit

I propose that Vin Cox be merged into Around the world cycling record. A separate article is unnecessary. A section within the destination article would best serve visitors. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:47, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Done, but I sort of regret it. Now, most of the Cox content should be removed. Hmmmmm. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 19:59, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

John Hathaway edit

ok, I need to do some digging, but John Hathaway established this record in the 70s. Need to get the resources, but I saw it in the GBWR at that time, so he did get it. http://www.randonneurs.bc.ca/writings/bios/john-hathaway.html

Maybe it wasn't an "around the world record" but that's how I understood it at the time. Will keep digging.

The "Year Record" section edit

Is there really any justification for having the section The "Year Record" in this article? It has nothing to do with cycling around the world, and most of the challengers don't even attempt a circumnavigation. --David Edgar (talk) 19:37, 2 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

I agree. Recommend merge into List of cycling records. FrankSier (talk) 10:57, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree as well. Also consider just a deletion instead of a merge of this section into List of cycling records, since all the content here is already contained in 'List of Cycling Records' page. Relspas (talk) 14:23, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
After I recommended merge, I realised I had used the wrong word (in WP terms). Wikipedia:Merging says "A merger is the process of uniting two or more pages into a single page." but in this case there will still be two separate pages, so it would not be a merge in that sense, but there might be something relevant in that article.
I have had a look to see if anything would be lost by a simple deletion, and there seem to be couple of details:
  • at the end of first paragraph "...recognised at the time by Cycling magazine."
  • the mention of William Pruett. (List_of_cycling_records#Men's_record mentions three cyclists attempting the record in 2015, but names Miles Smith as one of them rather than William Pruett.)
(It is probably worth checking if I have got this right: I sometimes miss things in big blocks of text.)

Both sound like good additions, good catch. The "year" record was invented by Cycling magazine, so I guess it's implied that they certified Tommy's record, but there is no explicit source in List of cycling records that Cycling magazine recognized Tommy's record. Migrating the citation for that certification would be useful. The William Pruett mention should only be added if it can be cited. Currently there is no citation for it. I have deleted the section, and, in "See also", provided a link to material about it. -- Hoary (talk) 07:15, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
