Given versus Leased

Richard Snow in his “A Measureless Peril… America in the fight for the Atlantic, the longest battle of World War II” (Scribner, 2010, ISBN 978 1-4165-9110-8) states on page 126 that Argentia was “a city given, not leased, to the United States by Britain”…

The statement that Argentia was part of lend lease appears in both the article on Naval Station Argentia and the article on Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Argentia was part of a 99 year lease with Newfoundland in 1941 when the Island was governed by Britain. Newfoundland's rights and responsibilities under this lease arrangement with the U.S. were assumed by Government of Canada after 1949 when Newfoundland joined Canada as its 10th province. In 1994, the Argentia lease came to an end and the property was returned to Canada. The land was transferred to Port of Argentia through land transfer agreements signed in 1999 and 2001. Port of Argentia is a not-for-profit corporation mandated to manage and develop the port and lands at Argentia to enhance the economic development of the Placentia area of Newfoundland and Labrador. Road to Argentia from TCH

I drove up to Argentia in April, 1968 and that road from the TCH to Argentia was the roughest darn gravel road I had ever seen. I ruined two tires driving that road to reach St. Johns before it was paved. If that was the improved road, I am glad not to have been on the unimproved version. The road was paved in 1969 and became a dream to drive.

A comment on the ferry. I don't remember a ferry coming to Argentia from the mainland when I first arrived. In 1970 a big ferry began running and that was the route I used to leave Newfoundland. Someone with the facilities should check these dates if they are important.

A comment on the railroad. When I was there, the train only came twice a week, I believe. I had an old Austin Mini which had a wheelbase that just matched the railroad tracks. I would line the tires up with the railroad tracks and let some air out of the tires. It would then hug the rails very well. I would motor out 2-3 miles to go trout fishing in areas where nobody would walk in. Of course I had to motor back in reverse. WhiteOakTrader (talk) 15:23, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
