Berta and Churchill (2012) have advised resurrection of the genus Arctophoca Peters, 1866 for seven of the eight Arctocephalus species, since they consider the possibility that Arctocephalus is paraphyletic. If their classification is followed, then Arctocephalus will be restricted to Arctocephalus pusillus (type species) and Arctophoca, Euotaria, and Gypsophoca are available for the other fur seals traditionally placed in Arctocephalus.
