Problem with walata/ancient ghana.

It was not settled in 4000 b.c. I think you guys are getting bp (before present) confused with b.c source:http://archaeology.about.com/od/bterms/g/bp.htm. It was started around 4000 years ago which is around 2000 b.c. It started around 4000 bp and ended around 2300 bp which means 2000 b.c - 300 b.c source:http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1631071309000996. Don't worry I will fix it. I had hoped to write more at this point, but that's life. Three sources coincided with indigenous Nigerian architecture, so that was the body of my edit today. I have some information about !Kung temporary settlements in the works - two books describe their habits in detail and I have a few more that I hope to read before this semester is over. Irrespective of my school project, I welcome discussion over on my user talk page, especially regarding images that could be beneficial to add to Wikipedia - I'm not familiar with the copyright issues in play here.Tdavis47 (talk) 07:32, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

I've moved your subsection to be a part of "West Africa", but you're free to suggest other arrangements. Dividing the section into vaguely geographical subsections is somewhat arbitrary and perhaps not as helpful as some other arrangement. However, that's the way it was when I found the article, and I sought to make it consistent. If you can't find image already at WP:COMMONS and there's a question regarding copyright, you might look at Wikipedia:Copyright assistance if you haven't already done so. Peer Review

I have to say that your introduction is very concise and easy for the reader to understand. My article's was a little confusing because of complicated wording and really was't broad enough to introduce all the content in the article. However, one thing that I noticed going through the rest of your article is that some sections are a lot larger than others. For example, the "Other pre-colonial Nigerian societies" section is significantly bigger than all the other sections under the Early architecture title. A little more balancing between sections throughout this article would be preferable, but I thought the content presented was great. I also thought that the structure of your article was really easy to follow. It flows chronologically with time and is really easy to pull information from if you are looking for a specific time in African architecture. Lastly, the only sentence that didn't appear neutral to me is the first one which states, "Like other aspects of the culture of Africa, the architecture of Africa is exceptionally diverse." Comparing the diversity of African culture to their culture seems more like an opinion than a relevant fact to me and it could probably be reworded. Major revision at History of architecture

Hello, there is a major revision going on on the page History of architecture and we need your help, the main contributor is very knowledgeable on the topic, but seems to lack a background in the African front and that is starting to be reflected on the African section which, for me, sounds a bit condescending. @Herrikez: Hello. I saw your topic here and looked at the page. There I indeed noticed what you described here/agree with your assessment (in the beginning the contributor had described sub-Saharan African architecture and "applied arts" as "pretty basic" with "few objects or buildings things being decorated", with no basis/suport - a very sweeping statement, certainly not generally true of sub-Saharan African arts, which are varied and often quite sophisticated, and often untrue of its architecture also). I also noticed they had removed quite a lot of useful/helpful and relevant text (and images) on different types African architecture, without an explanation. A lot of sourced information was deleted, and what was added seemed misleading/not entirely accurate. I restored much of what was removed, editing some for concision (and also made some edits/additions including additional refs). Skllagyook (talk) 22:13, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi all, thanks for the attention. Unfortunately, my life has changed somewhat and I haven't had the time or resources to engage with wiki editing much, nor do I anticipate doing so in the near future. I'm glad to see someone remembers me! I initially engaged w/ this page as a school project through the University of Wyoming - I could recommend checking out their library for the resources I used and the resources I would have liked to use, but I might have only gotten access due to my student status. Too many subsections and subheadings

The organization of headings is nice and logical when you look at the the table of contents, and I appreciate the effort by recent editors to put some thought into it. Unfortunately, when one reads through the body of the article it becomes much harder to follow, especially because some sections are relatively long and complex. At some points, the headings go all the way down the hierarchy to sub-heading level 4; but after sub-heading level 2 headings are all visually identical (same size and font), so it's no longer practical for readers distinguish which subsections are supposed to be embedded under which sections. In some cases, there are subsection headings immediately followed by another subsection heading, with no other content inside the higher section: e.g. in Early architecture section, "Nigeria" contains only "Nok Culture" with no other content, same with "Chad" and "Sao Civilization", in Medieval section the same with "Sudan" and "Nubia", with "Ghana" and "Ashanti"; and so on. These cases look redundant to me and the two-level headings could just be collapsed into one heading (e.g. "Sudan" and "Nubia" can be simplified to "Nubia"), unless or until other content is added to justify two levels. In general though, we should maybe consider larger and more consolidated sections throughout. R Prazeres (talk) 19:41, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

PS: I guess I should also add that grouping things according to modern-day borders might also be contributing to unnecessary subheadings; the modern-day borders have little relevance to the pre-modern periods, so grouping things in this fashion may be artificial and unnecessary. E.g. In the "Early architecture" section, most of the country-specific headings (Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Mauritania, Egypt, etc) are largely redundant, and in some cases they don't align with the territory discussed in the subsections anyways (e.g. Numidia is also relevant much further west than Tunisia).
