could Betty Cuthbert be added in the births section (since there is a wiki page about her too)

In reply to the guy above, I wonder about adding fictional character birthdays. This is Marge Simpson's birthday, too. Homer claims to remember it because it's "the same as Hitler's"... But I don't see any others mentioned here, so I didn't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.1.186.174 (talkcontribs) 17:34, 20 April 2008

420

Known to the counter-culture as "National Smoke-Out Day", April 20th has long been known to be the day that "stoners" celebrate getting "high". It is widely believed, although not entirely true, that 420 is a police code for narcotics. See also; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_%28cannabis_culture%29

Columbine-Like

I put up a Note on the April 20 page noting that students often choose it to attempt a school shooting in memory of Columbine. Does anyone disagree with that?

I'd just like to mention,

  • Oklahoma city bombing April 19
  • Hitler's birthday - April 20
  • Columbine - April 20th
  • V-tech shooting - April 16
  • Waco Branch Davidian standoff - April 19

Holidays such as "Birth of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh&hf)

Please stop reverting this. This is based on the Islamic Lunar Calendar and not on the Gregorian calendar. If you wish to add such holidays not based on the Gregorian calendar, then you might as well add EVERY holiday on every single date they occured that isn't based on the Gregorian calendar. Such as (examples, may not be true):

April 18 1849 - Birth of Muhammad (pbuh&hf) April 19 1850 - Birth of Muhammad (pbuh&hf)

It is pointless to put those things down for Gregorian dates. However, it is good to put them down for their dates on their correct calendar (eg Muhammad's (pbuh&hf) birth for 17 Rabi'l-Awwal on the Islamic calendar). Thanks! Armyrifle 00:02, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Someone removed the birthdate for Muhammed. I've restored this. I understand that there is a dispute about the date (year= 570 (also disputed) on April 20 or April 26) I welcome your thoughts on the following: I propose leaving the April 20 date (and perhaps April 26 and indicating that this is disputer). Thoughts? Thanks, Hu Gadarn 18:23, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
The same thing is done for Jesus on numerous dates for assumed birth dates. I would think the same thing would apply here. -- Borameer 19:46, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Cannabis culture

April 20 is a very important day for cannabis smokers worldwide. Many protests against anti-cannabis laws happen on this day. This should not be removed from the article just because the holiday is not "official". It probably never will be because of its drug-related theme, but it is still important. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.188.253.13 (talk) 16:45, 3 March 2007 (UTC).

I agree. Over 20 million Americans smoke marijuana and many of them celebrate this holiday even though it is not sanctioned by the US government. Furthermore, this isn't exclusive to Americans. Even arguing from an antidrug standpoint, if parents were to hear their kids talking about celebrating 420 or April 20th, they may like to find out why that is. There is no rational reason to exclude this from Wikipedia. NaK-Pump 23:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Adding Daijiro Kato to the list of Deaths for this entry

Daijiro Kato, a MotoGP rider died on April 20th, 2003. He has an entry on Wikipedia, but I think that he should be included on the April 20th page as well.

http://world.honda.com/WGP/2003/0420.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daijiro_Kato

He was considered to be one of the major rising stars of Motorcycle racing and was the first person that people widely believed could contend with Valentino Rossi's dominance of the sport. Forgey 08:38, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Saint Victor

The Victor whose feast day is celebrated on 20 April is not Victor Maurus (whose feast day is 8 May). The 20 April Victor is one of a group of martyrs killed in Nicodemia in 303 A.D. See [1]. PubliusFL 16:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

sorry for marking my change as minor. that was a mistake on my part; i was confused as to the exact meaning of minor changes. but i'm confused why 420 does not constitute a holiday/observance on April 20th? Real eyes realize real lies (talk) 22:06, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

It is not a widely celebrated religious or social observance. It is a counterculture "holiday" and has no real global significance. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 23:22, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

whether or not it is widely celebrated would be hard to determine. the fact that it is a "counterculture holiday" does not change the fact that it is a holiday for a certain group of people. Real eyes realize real lies (talk) 01:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

this link should put the occasion as notable, as a yearly, widely observed cultural event among youth. I surely hope I will not have to work on [420 (cannabis culture) this page] to put in on the events page. This event surely will not end up on the main page ever, I should think. Cleanup Request

The quality of this article is absolutely appalling. I understand why it's locked, but that doesn't justify the unprofessional nature of the content within. Who gives a damn if this article is vandalized frequently. It is not notable at all. Same with the speculation regarding the whole "110 day of the year, 110 years since Hitler's birthday" bit in the part about Columbine. This article is about April 4th and anything relevant to that date. Get some good editors in here and trim the fat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.90.76.19 (talk) 05:35, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup of births and deaths

In accordance with the guidelines, I'm continuing to weed the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these have been transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort. 20th April 1889

There is a very important historical event missing on this page. And yet, the fiftieth anniversary of this event is included further down the page.

Is it too politically incorrect to include the birth of Hitler on this page, or what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.49.45.40 (talk) 03:20, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Oh, the eternal whining about "political correctness". Look more carefully next time, and include the "Births" section in your perusal. Drmies (talk) 03:22, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
    • I wasn't whining. I just didn't see the page broken into sections when I scrolled through. That would fall under the "or what" part of my question. 96.49.45.40 (talk) 03:29, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
      • No, "or what" is just an expression of unfriendliness. In general, complaints that cite "political correctness" are whiny. Drmies (talk) 04:06, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
        • How can you say what *my* expression is to mean? Please don't generalise my words or let your postion as an editor jade you. 96.49.45.40 (talk) 10:14, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello! Would it be possible to make this page be like the other pages about days(like this)? The split up events is making a program I have using the API crash. Thank you. Tamoor622498 (talk) 13:02, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 21 April 2021

Hello! This is in reference to my past request about changing the format of the page (I don't know how to continue that request). Where am I able to submit this request for discussion? The main reason I wanted this page to change was to allow the WikiAPI for Python to be able to parse the page. The edit would essentially be changing the formatting from what it currently is, to something akin to this, this, or this. If the current version for the page is the new standard for how all of the pages for the days of the year will look, then I'm happy to keep the page and ask for all pages in days of the year to be converted to the same format. The only thing I need is for all of the pages to have consistent HTML. This lets me and all users of the WikiAPI use the portions of the pages we need in the code we write.

If all of the pages for the days of the year are planned to be changed, please let me know. I would love to help in the conversion. Thank you. Tamoor622498 (talk) 01:13, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

@Tamoor622498: What specifically do you need changed for it to work? Day-of-the-year article formatting is considered static and drastic changes will not happen without community consensus. All I notice that is different is that this page has more subheadings. If your code cannot work around minor markup differences, that's an issue you have to work out yourself.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 03:50, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
The sub-divisions, to break up massive birth lists in particular, are being rolled out across all 366 date pages after discussion at WP:DOY. The changes are being done gradually and the process is nowhere near complete. I do not see how it could affect whatever the "parsing" is seeking to achieve. No Great Shaker (talk) 06:35, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
@Ganbaruby and @No Great Shaker: The old formatting would generate HTML code that was essentially a heading like Events followed by the list under it. This made it so that if I wanted to grab the entire Events section, I would have my program start at Events and continue down until I encountered another heading. Now that there are sub-divisions, the list of events is split up into smaller lists separated by headings like "pre-19th century". I can update my code to work with this change, but then it would not work for the old format. The only thing I really needed was consistency in how all pages look. Seeing as how this new formatting is planned to roll out across all DOY pages, I think it would be best if I just waited until all of the pages had similar formatting.
Also, I'd really like to help in updating the pages. Is there a style guide I can reference to see how all these pages should look? The page for April 20 and April 21 are still a bit different even after the update. I was thinking about following the April 21 style, but if there is an official one, I could just as easily use that. Tamoor H (talk) 10:41, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
@Tamoor622498: I assume that the consensus that No Great Shaker is talking about is at this discussion, which is to follow Wikipedia:WikiProject Days of the year/Template. I will note that NGS created more subheadings on this page compared to the template, for some reason. If you would like, you may start adding these subheadings to other dates. By the way, from my rudimentary understanding of code, can't you just use conditionals?  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 14:13, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
