Regarding the "No Catholics are allowed" statement which has been inserted. The organisation is a Protestant fraternity. If you are Muslim, Catholic, Hindu, Jewish or whatever you cannot join. The ABOD commemorates the siege of Derry where Protestants suffered the longest siege in the British Isles and ended up eating dogs, rats and horses and taking heavy casualties due to starvation. As such it is a commemorative organisation.

There have been no riots at the Apprentice Boys celebrations for a number of years since they came to an accomodation with the cities chamber of commerce, business owners and the residents of the predominantly Catholic "City side" or "West Bank" of L`derry. (BTW - The City Centre is on the city side and is used by all communities; the Waterside on the otherside of the river Foyle is majority Protestant.) The week long Maiden City Festival (which celebrates Ulster-Scots, Irish and minority cultures through the week, culminating in the Apprentice Boys march through the city and around the walls of the city) is promoted by the city and the Northern Ireland tourist board amongst others.

Aughavey 23:41, 14 July 2005 (UTC) I am wondering why lapsed pacifist saw fit to change King James II of England & Ireland to just England? There were various monarchs who were King / Queen of England, Ireland and France all at the same time.Reply

RE: "No Catholics allowed" I remember reading on the ABOD site that they allow Catholics to join, its only the Orange Order who do not allow catholics or those married to catholics to join. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.122.109.188 (talk) 20:17, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ulster/Northern Ireland

edit

Lapsed Pacifist seems to like to revert the location of Derry from Northern Ireland to Ulster. While Derry is indeed in Ulster, it is more specifically in Northern Ireland. --Mal 04:00, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair point Mal - and he also seems to forget that 3 counties of Ulster (Cavan (An Cabhán), Donegal (Dún na nGall) and Monaghan (Muineachán)) form part of Eire. Ho hum.Darth Doctrinus 15:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Can anyone explain why they use Derry instead of L'derry in the organization's name? Thanks.--L'irlandés (talk) 18:45, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

When they were formed in 1814 the city's name was not the big issue it later became. A lot of Irish placenames that are clearly the compound of two distinct names were frequently abbreviated to just one of the names without opening many eyes, and this city was often called both "Derry" and "Londonderry" regardless of one's background. Attitudes changed from the 1960s onwards when one side started demanding the removal of "London~" and the other reacted by insisting upon it and using "Londonderry" when previously they would have been perfectly content to just say "Derry". See for instance the comments of Peter Robinson (a member of the Apprentice Boys) in 1984. Timrollpickering (talk) 12:15, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Given that, why is the page's Infobox headed with the title "Apprentice Boys of Londonderry"? Is that a mistake? FrankP (talk) 20:29, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Is this really correct?

From the article:

King James demanded their surrender which resulted in the famous retort of "".

"Famous" is arguable anyway (certainly so without a reference, and especially to non-NI readers), but if it really was "" then that certainly needs a reference. Loganberry (Talk) 10:26, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Memorial Hall

edit

This deserves its own page, particularly once it becomes part of the new shared space that is envisaged with the peace III money. However, I don't know enough about the building to start. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doopa (talkcontribs) 21:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Membership

edit

Is the bit about the SF guy libeling really the second most important thing about the membership? Surely something else can be said about the membership. I'd suggest creating a separate section on the ABOD and the troubles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doopa (talkcontribs) 09:13, 20 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
