Maps (Apple-sourced application) vs. Maps (Google-sourced aka Google Maps)

This page only talks about the Maps application as we know it in iOS 6. Should we also add information about it in previous versions of iOS – since it after all is called "Maps (application)"? –– 76.10.241.86 (talk) 05:30, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't know. If the Google Maps app was previously called Maps, then I guess something should be add. But I originally intended to only cover the Apple app here.—Chris!_c/t 19:18, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Image Comparison

Any chance of ensuring that image comparisons of the two versions are zoomed in? Description of the "Mildura" problem in Australia is not completely correct.

That whole paragraph needs significant rewriting, as it does not address the central issue. In rural Australia, the problem is that the application does not show towns at all. Instead, the symbol used to designate a town on Google Maps is now used to show some calculated "centr-ish" point of a local geographic area (LGA). That statement is the key to understanding the issue. So the app is potentially confusing in places such as the mentioned town, Mildura, where the name of the LGA is the same as the name of its main town. So, to a user vaguely but not intimately familiar with the area, it may well appear that the symbol is that of the town, even though it is not. The problem is compounded by the statistical fact that a vast number of rural LGAs in Australia are similar to Mildura in that they have the same name as that of their main town. Mt Isa, the town/LGA named in the previous comment, is indeed another example.

Perhaps this can be made clearer by looking at an example where this is not the case. The town of Mudgee is the administrative centre of the Mid-Western Regional LGA, so that is the name associated with the town-like symbol. And there is no symbol for Mudgee, because there is no such LGA. So here the symbol/name does not create any confusion, since the name given is clearly not that of a town.

Moving back to the article, then, and armed with the above explanation we can see that statements like "... The locations of many other regional towns in Australia, however, remain incorrect ..." is not true. Apple Maps

I completely agree. Word is "Microsoft Word". Mustang is "Ford Mustang". Etc etc. This isn't true for everything, like the videogame "Doom", but there aren't any other games with the same name. "Maps (application)" is completely generic, and there have been many for the desktop/PC long before either Google or Apple maps.
