The Western Type Book edit

Quoting section 3, Printing career [tag mine]:

(quote) Rowe designed and printed The Western Type Book (1960), with specimen pages of all the many different types held by Western in different sizes which became a bible for publishers' production managers.[citation needed]

Neither LCCat nor WorldCat (External links) credit Rowe for this book--but it may be a book that libraries do not catalog. (Continued four hours later, below. -P64)

Two online dealers seem to offer that 1960 book. Neither blurb mentions Rowe and one names another designer.

  • One dealer offers:[http://www.amazon.com/Analysed-specimens-Monotype-Intertype-available/dp/B0016CWZMW] The Western Type Book: 194 specimens of typefaces for books, foreword by Hans Schmoller; Hamish Hamilton, first edition, 1960.
  • One dealer offers:[1] The Western Type Book: 180 specimens of typefaces for books, foreword Hans Schmoller; Hamish Hamilton, 1960. "Designed by John Ryder." "With clipped newspaper review from TLS loosely inserted."

Those titles are displayed on the dustjacket images provided by the dealers. The interior title may be The Western Type Book: Analysed Specimens of Monotype Linotype and Intertype faces suitable for bookwork and available at Western Printing Services, Bristol.

Google Images: the western type book[2] may be useful or interesting.

(Quoting myself from above):
Neither LCCat nor WorldCat (External links) credit Rowe for this book--but it may be a book that libraries do not catalog.
  • Library of Congress online catalog search[3] does not hit Title begins with "western type book"
  • WorldCat provides several hits[4] including one[5] that informs "Publisher: Bristol: [Western Printing Services Ltd.], 1960. ... published by Hamish Hamilton London for Western Printing Services Ltd."
Quickly I checked all the first-page hits at WorldCat and found no dustjacket or cover images.
