Update "current orders"

Can the moderator of the page or someone with knowledge about the current orders box update it to the 2007 MAKS Airshow orders. I tried but it isn't working, Cubana ordered 3 and there are other orders as well, here is the link: [1] Iberian 17:58, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

The orders do not reflect the current state. Moscow Airlines was stopped ops over a year ago. I doubt that they will take the 30 aircraft on order. 79.242.149.217 (talk) 12:23, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Performance

Can somebody tell me something about the performance compared to Sukhoi Superjet 100? An-148 seems to be less hyped that the Su. 84.173.213.136 12:02, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Keep in mind that the An-148 had a test flight crash which ended with 6 people dead, possibly a mechanical issue with the airspeed indicator and subsequent actions by the crew which made the aircraft exceed Vne leading to an in flight breakup. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.147.96.227 (talk) 01:50, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Current Orders

The article section on this is a total mess. The enormous number of orders cannot be confirmed anywhere and exists only on the English version of this page.

  • Some of the references for orders are missing.
  • Several others, like aeroflot, and supposed India deals do not mention firm orders, only intentions.
  • "Aerosvit"'s order of 15 is very dubious, the company no longer uses the 2 planes they already got.
  • The "reference" about Iran's 78 planes orders is a joke. The website and the actual content of the "news" is not even remotely plausible.
  • Iran's other "order" of 50 aircraft is, according to the very reference used, only a letter of intent, no a firm order.
  • Cuba's order reference is not working.
  • Panama's order is only for 3 planes, the other 12 a option.

I think the orders need to tidied up, and unreferenced claims about orders need to be removed.D2306 (talk) 20:56, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

HESA IrAn-148 info completely disregarded

It is sad that the HESA IrAn-148 article was just deleted without links and text being migrated to this article.

I Cant find deleted article, HESA IrAn-148 it has been a redirect since May 2013 with no deleted content. If you can remember the exact article title it would help. MilborneOne (talk) 07:40, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

It is time to create an English language article on AN-178

It is time to create an English language article on AN-178. Antonov has just rolled out it's first fuselage assembly of AN-178 military cargo prototype to be test flown in 1Q 2015. It is important to publicize this type because it is a direct competitor to Embraer KC-390, which also rolled out it's first fuselage assembly a few days ago. Thus both competing prototypes are to be first flown at about the same time in the beginning of 2015. Creating a Wikipedia article has nothing to do with its importance or its competitors, but with notability in reliable published sources. I've seen a couple of English language sources about the An-178, but they were quite brief, and didn't contain enough details to write an article with. Most of the sources at uk:Ан-178 are in Ukrainian, which I don't read, and I don't write articles based on machine translations of interwiki articles or its sources. - BilCat (talk) 01:02, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
A link on fuselage roll-out I have provided above is an English language article on Antonov corporate website, it also has pictures. AN-178 and KC-390 are new generation military twin jet transports in 20 ton payload class. They are developed to replace aging-out C-130 Hercules of early models and AN-12 4-engine turboprops. This topic deserves coverage because it is an important industry development heralding generational change in tactical airlift cargo segment. Also, it happens that first two entrants are from third world countries and no other country has anything like that in their development pipelines. I can help to translate AN-178 article from Ukrainian language if you are interested to collaborate. Draft Article on AN-178

The Antonov An-178 (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-178) is a prospective short-haul military transport jet designed by the Ukrainian Antonov company based on AN-158 airframe. General Designer -- Sergei Kiva. Development began on February 5, 2010 . Roll-out and first flight are expected in April – May 2015. AN-178 is to replace obsolete aircraft types AN-12, AN-26 and AN-32. The aircraft will have avionics common to AN-148 family and upgraded Motor Sich D-436-148FM jet engines. Manufacturing of the aircraft will be deployed at Antonov Serial Plant in cooperation with Russian and Western suppliers. Estimated cost of the An-178 is $20-$25 million [1]. Interest in the project was expressed by the Indian Air Force. Ukrainian side has also approached Russian Ministry of Defense to consider AN-178 in its tender for new medium military transport aircraft.

History of development

In February 2010 Motor Sich president Vyacheslav Boguslayev announced beginning of work on the design of a new transport aircraft An-178. The program will cost $150 million, the aircraft will be based on the passenger An-158 airframe, which in its turn is a modernization of An-148 (with increased passenger capacity due to stretched fuselage). An-178 is intended to replace obsolete transport aircraft like An-12, An-26 and An-32 operated by Russia, Ukraine and some other countries [3]. Antonov An-178 design relies on completion of the upgraded Motor Sich D-436-148FM engine, which is a further development of D-436-148 jet with increased thrust in primary flight modes. Initially the first flight was expected in 2013 [4], as per July 2011 announcement by Antonov. Later, Antonov publicised new date for the beginning of trials - 2014. On July 29, 2014 first fuselage assembly has been rolled out of the jig and transferred to final assembly area. An-178 aircraft is a potential competitor to Alenia Aeronautica C-27J [en], Embraer KC-390 and Lockheed Martin C-130J.

Design specifications

AN-178 will differ from other family models such as AN-148 and AN-158 in that it will have rear doors and ramp. AN-178 will have lifting ability up to 18 tons. Compared to AN-12, new design's cargo bay has larger volume and can accommodate sea containers as well as IATA containers. Also, unlike that of AN-12, cargo bay is pressurized. Fuel efficiency of twin jet An-178 is better than that of AN-12, which is a four engine turboprop. Engine D-436-148FM is structurally similar to the base model, but will have 15% higher thrust. AN-178 fuselage will also have larger wing box.


Design of AN-178 involves development of the following new components:

• more powerful version of the D-436-148FM


Family continuity will be preserved in the following components:

• cockpit

• wing from the An-158

• tail assembly

• avionics

• actuators

• electric equipment

• hydraulics

These systems are mostly ready and certified, which greatly reduces overall cost and development time. Also, due to economies of scale in maintenance of the whole family this approach dramatically reduces the cost of introduction and operation (training facilities in place, standard maintenance, availability of trained personnel, common spare parts base, standard airfield equipment, etc.).

Prospective market

Ukrainian aviation specialists believe that market for Antonov An-178 may be about 800 aircraft over 10-12 years. The airplane is expected to be priced at approximately $20-25 million. Thus, the volume of the total market is estimated in the range from $16 Billion to $20 Billion [5]. Russian Defense Ministry indicated cautious interest in the An-178, because it currently sponsors competing MTA program. However, MTA is far from realization as it requires enormous investment in development as well as overcoming formidable technical and certification issues, heavy introduction funding and creating a service base from scratch. On the other hand, integration of An-178 and MTS projects is quite realistic given successful collaboration of Antonov and India in the past. Also, cost escalation on Western programs in India has recently been a point of contention [6].

AN-178, which was conceived primarily as a replacement to An-12, is one of several new medium transport aircraft that could reach the market in this decade. Its closest competitors are the Embraer KC-390 and Multipurpose Transport Aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics and Russian United Aircraft. Recently Antonov also announced the start of preliminary design study of naval aviation patrol aircraft based on the An-168 [7]. Antonov believes that there is a niche segment available for aircraft larger than the An-74 and the Italian C-27J, and smaller than the American C-130. Antonov An-178 has been designed to target this niche [8].
