Jewish Ethnicity
editThere appear to be some wikipedians who object to referring to Jewish ethnicity in the "lead" of a biographical article.
I see that it is common practice to include the race or ethnic background in the lead of a biographical article. Please see the following searches for numerous examples of the following adjectives being used in the lead:
For example: Jewish Black African American Chinese Turkish Irish Beganlocal (talk) 21:08, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- I suggest we omit it from the lead. The lead, "should establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points...The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic" (WP:LEAD). The question is, therefore, is how much prominence is given to his ethnic background in reliable sources? The answer appears to be "not much". — Matt Crypto 20:28, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Regrettably little is mentioned in the mainstream media of Mr Steen's work in advancing Jewish-Arab relations. He visited Givat Haviva with his wife during a visit to Israel, and his daughter volunteers there. The majority of biographical articles I have seen (and searched for in google) appear to include some description of ethnicity, and I suggest it is included for the sake of completeness where it is relevant. I would suggest that where a person is active in matters affecting their ethnic community it is relevant especially when they make a notable contribution. I do agree that his ethnicity is not given prominence in most sources, and on that basis perhaps it would be in order to remove it. Beganlocal (talk) 21:07, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
