How many times? edit

How many times did Ainley play the Master? DavidFarmbrough 11:19, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I make it eleven different serials (Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Time-Flight, King's Demons, Five Doctors, Planet of Fire, Androzani, Mark of the Rani, Trial, Survival), plus the Destiny of the Doctors game. —Whouk (talk) 10:32, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

James Bond? edit

What's the James Bond connection? The article doesn't mention anything. Totnesmartin 21:49, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

One of the policemen in the early scenes of "You Only Live Twice", though I am not sure if he is very visible in the final edit. 2A00:23C8:8F9F:4801:5D44:82DA:6547:4B3A (talk) 18:45, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Cause of death? edit

How did he die? --72.202.150.92 (talk) 05:25, 20 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The London Times obituary (June 2004) suggests 'cancer' as the cause of death. To my knowledge, this is the only obituary to do so (or to suggest any specific cause at all). The Times obituary also lists his age as 66 rather than 71, however, so certain facts are foggy (or at least divergent). Ainley was private/secluded to the point where his body was not immediately discovered, and his friends/fans initially believed the 'death' to be a prank; I'd like to work this [privacy] into the writeup somehow, as I think it is central to his life. Cheese edit

There is no reference for the cheese reference and I have trouble believing it. Does anyone have any way of substantiating this claim? Mtpaley (talk) 21:52, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

What "cheese reference"? Ainley famously "despised cheese of all kinds" according to his friends, one reason he ate alone in his car and not with the rest of his cricket team. 2A00:23C8:8F9F:4801:5D44:82DA:6547:4B3A (talk) 18:47, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think there may be some confusion here. Mini Babybels were invented by the actor Paul Shane, of Hi-de-Hi fame. Ainley invented Dairylea triangles. Tsuguya (talk) 02:24, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Query edit

In the commentary and documentary for The Mark of the Rani, both Colin Baker and Kate O'Mara say that "He only ever wanted to play the Master." Baker remarked that he could afford this luxury.... - what "luxury"? Playing The Master? Why would this be a luxury or be dependent upon him being of independent means? Or are there some words missing.......? -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 13:47, 22 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Presumably, he didn't need to find steady work. DonQuixote (talk) 13:55, 22 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
The obituary in The Guardian says "It could not be said that acting was Ainley's lifeblood: he often turned down roles to spend time playing sports, notably as a member of the London Theatres Cricket Club." 2A00:23C8:8F9F:4801:5D44:82DA:6547:4B3A (talk) 18:53, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
