Some questions / comments:

The statement: The casualties of the South African Irish were extremely heavy (only 140 men of all ranks survived) and included its commanding officer at that time, Lieutenant-Colonel Dobbs. - The "semi" Official South African Record by Orpen states that the 5th Brigade went into battle on 23 Nov 41 with a strength of 5,700 men and a month later, after all the survivors had been re-grouped in Mersa Matruh, the total strength was 2,306. (Only 5 field guns and two 2-pounders were got out to join 1 SA Division.) Although these figures are for the Brigade - I think some reference is needed to substantiate the SA Irish losses, which seem rather high when compared to the Brigade.
A comment, rather than a correction: This unit later returned to North Africa as a component of the South African 6th Armoured Division..... Although the regiment did return to Egypt with the 6 SA Div, it was for training and was not a deployment as such. The first actual operational deployment was to Italy.
