At age 17 and with her participation in the Commonwealth Games, I was surprised to Andrea's professional status until I read the following written in the article Olympic Games
'the Olympics shifted away from amateurism, as envisioned by Pierre de Coubertin, to allowing participation of professional athletes, but only in the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its influence within the International Olympic Committee.' Looking at the slight dispute at the moment, I've opened this section. But not really to discuss whether French should be included (indisputably French, and something that the British media enjoys mentioning), but more to discuss how the three nationalities (British, French, Italian - read on) should all be presented in the lead, because "British-French-Italian professional diver" is a bit of a mouthful. Reminder that the lead is an overview, and the subject's multiple nationalities is more of a footnote, especially having not impacted her career.
First, I don't know why the article was changed from saying her mother is Italian to saying her mother is of Italian heritage, without changing the sources. All sources – including recent coverage (after this article was changed to say "heritage", i.e. we know they're not just reading WP) from e.g. Sky, the Independent, and the Guardian (which also refers to Spendolini-Sirieix herself mentioning it, plus the quote I’m half-French, half-Italian and half-British.) – simply say her mother is Italian.
The issue we are faced with, however, is that the lead is pretty short and the phrase "British-French-Italian" (or any variation thereof) is pretty long. Could I propose that, based on precedent of compromises used in similar situations, the lead says "British-born[a] professional diver" (or "British[a] professional diver" if people think the "-born" would be misleading given she represents Britain) with a footnote immediately after the nationality (the [a]) explaining the French and Italian of it all. Something along the lines of "Spendolini-Sirieix was born in and competes for the United Kingdom, but is also a French and Italian national by birth."
There is also the option to use the sources from the Early life section, and those I mention above, to expand on the issue of nationalities within the body text (rather than lead). Information from Olympics online coverage that mention she speaks all those languages plus Spanish could also be added, for example, making the section "Early life and education".
