Origin of the mosque

edit

Note: claims about the mosque being built in the 7th century (642) are WP:EXCEPTIONAL and should be supported by reliable academic sources, not by local news stories, which tend to uncritically repeat folk traditions that often associate local mosques with the earliest days of Islam. Despite the many references on Islamic history and architecture in Egypt, I'm not aware of any publications that mention this mosque as originating in the 7th century; unlike the Amr ibn al-As Mosque in Cairo, for which there are plenty of sources. I've managed to find some mention of the mosque (largely under a different name) in a few scholarly sources. Unsurprisingly, the one source that talks about its dating expresses skepticism that it could be the same mosque established in the 7th century, given that the original town was destroyed in the 13th century and moved. Article revised accordingly. R Prazeres (talk) 07:34, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
