An article that you have been involved in editing—Alpine climbing—has been proposed for merging with another article. If you are interested, please participate in the merger discussion. Thank you. Dougsim (talk) 21:44, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Alpine climbing does not distinguish the distinctive style of alpine clmbing, but just mentions general mountaineering. Suggest merge of re-direct to Alpine Style, which is more descriptive of the meaning - a light-weight assault on a mountain in minimum time by a small party.

This is a stub I started based on the German Wiki article de:Alpinklettern which goes into much more detail about the type of climbing it is; it's not just general mountaineering. It's not considered quite the same as Alpine style which is a separate article (de:Alpinstil). I'm willing to expand this one by translating the rest of Alpinklettern if that would help. Thanks for commenting on this. I'm still not certain what the notability or unique content of the article is, based on its present content. A furher translation may help, but I dont see that the german article has received very much attention or had many edits in its lifetime, so does not seem well-used or important. If the article were to be called Climbing in the alps, that would be specific to climbs in the Alps, but it would be better in such as wikitravel or other wiki. You can translate further, but I'm not convinced at the moment that in English usage, it warrants a duplication of what is already in mountaineering. Dougsim (talk) 12:14, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

From my research, it's clear that a number of sources view Alpine climbing and/or alpinism as a sub-discipline of climbing and/or as being different from general mountaineering. For example, one site states that "Today, mountaineering is divided into many sub-categories which include hill walking, traditional and sport rock climbing, ice climbing and alpinism or winter mountaineering." So I'm not convinced these terms are the same as mountaineering, but more research is needed to define how they are used in English and whether further translation of the German article would better capture that. It may be that there is a cultural difference in the use of these words between Europe, the home of the Alps where alpinism started, and America where the terms may be more loosely used. It will be interesting to see how the application by the UIAA for alpinism to become recognised as a UNESCO intangible heritage develops. They, too, seem to see it as different, albeit related to, generic mountaineering. Bermicourt (talk) 14:51, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
Alpine climbing is a very distinct branch of climbing and mountaineering, and an important one. A much bigger article could be made here. 78.18.228.191 (talk) 00:24, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
I've translated the rest of the material from the German Wiki article which may aid the discussion. It will need proofing though, as I'm not a climber. Bermicourt (talk) 11:37, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
That is very helpful, I will get around to it at some stage (currently finished Free solo climbing and Piolet d'Or - which ironically is the biggest award in mountaineering and is almost exclusively for alpine climbing). 78.18.228.191 (talk) 12:52, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

This is an important article in WP climbing (probably the most important after rock climbing). I have merged "Alpine style" into this article (and referenced it) as it is an important sub-topic of alpine climbing. I don't plan to do the same for expedition style as there is no equivalent "head article" (i.e Himalayan climbing is not as well defined), and will instead try to develop expedition style into a bigger article on its own. Alpine climbing is broader than just climbing in the Alps and is probably the second most important climbing discipline after rock climbing. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:14, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Milestones

Have added a section on major alpine climbing milestones. Would love to find if there was ever such a list compiled? Aszx5000 (talk) 11:18, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
