Ecology edit

This sentence "Unlike some other alders, it does require moist soil, and is a colonist of screes and shallow stony slopes." looks like it should read "it does not require moist soil," but I'm unsure. Kerrplunk (talk) 04:17, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fruit / Nuts edit

A few sources say this has a cone-shaped fruit, or a winged-like nut. But not all pictures show this characteristic. Anyway, I almost added it, but I thought I'd wait and verify with another person first. If it has fruit and nuts it should be mentioned. --Cheap-stock-photos (talk) 18:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

viridis v alnobetula edit

I'm not a botanist. But there is inconsistency between this page and Alnus alnobetula which claims to be the more correct name for this. The confusion seems only to deepen on the Alder page itself. Will botanists please agree on something? :) Simon Grant (talk) 07:13, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Alnus viridisAlnus alnobetulaAlnus viridis is listed as a synonym of Alnus alnobetula in Kew's Plants of the World Online. The basionym of A. alnobetula is a couple years older than that for A. viridis, but I'm not sure if that is the reason it's accepted in POWO, or even if that might be out of date. Alnus viridis ia actually listed as a synonym of the nominotypical and European subspecies of A. alnobetula, but that just seems incorrect, since there are accepted North American subspecies of A. alnobetula in POWO too. Someone who knows more about taxonomy than I should feel free to explain why this would be. Thank you! Hyperik talk 16:18, 21 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Follow-up response from Rafaël Govaerts at Kew to my question about whether its due to the basionym publishing date priority: "Yes...that's right. Certainly in Europe [Alnus alnobetula] is now universally accepted.". So perhaps this does not really require much for discussion...—Hyperik talk 15:20, 22 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose on technical grounds (but support as a matter of taxonomic principle) Alnus alnobetula is an article with some history (not just a redirect to A. viridis). Merging and redirecting A. viridis to A. alnobetula would be a more appropriate solution than executing a move. Plantdrew (talk) 16:43, 24 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, yeah, whatever method is best to combine the two! —Hyperik talk 15:10, 25 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
