AlavidsAlids of Tabaristan, Daylam and Gilan or a variant thereof – The name "Alavids" is merely a different, Persianate form of "Alids", and "Zaydids" likewise a variant of "Zaydis". A search in Google Books ("Alavid" & "Zaydid") shows clearly that neither of the two terms is actually used for a specific dynasty, let alone for the Alids of Tabaristan, but rather in their generic sense. This usage is confirmed by the most authoritative secondary and tertiary sources: the Encyclopaedia Iranica has its article under the title "ʿALIDS OF ṬABARESTĀN, DAYLAMĀN, AND GĪLĀN", the Encyclopedia of Islam uses the terms in a similar manner in its articles on the Alids ("Meanwhile, in 175/791, some Zaydids (of the line of Zayd b. Hasan) took refuge in Daylam, where in 250/864 they were able to establish the first of a series of local dynasties.") on Mazandaran ("Alongside of these native dynasties, the 'Alids were able to establish themselves, principally in Tabaristan. In 250/864 the people of Ruyan, rebelling against the governor, sent to Rayy for the Zaydi Sayyid Hasan b. Zayd, a descendant of the caliph 'Ali in the sixth generation. This (Hasanid) branch ruled in Tabaristan till 316/928. The Husaynid branch ruled from 304/916-17 to 337/948-9 (?).") and on the dynasty's founder ("founder of an Alid dynasty in Tabaristan"), while the great Iranologist W. Madelung also designates them simply as "Alids" in the Cambridge History of Iran Constantine 13:54, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
